08:20 AM ET 04.19 | While ratings are strong, there may be a black eye forming on the NHL brand. [On Wednesday,] the NHL's chief operating officer admitted the league is hearing from its business partners over the rash of suspensions and fines arising out of the on-ice antics, and the ensuing media coverage. "They're paying us a lot of money to associate with our brand," said John Collins, who came to the NHL from the NFL. "So when our brand is under attack in the press on issues as serious as player safety, they want to know that the league is on top of it, and has a plan for dealing with it and hear the league articulate it." ... TSN, which is broadcasting games featuring American teams, has seen its viewership numbers increase by 56 per cent.

Interesting dynamic where fans love to watch that style of play and the corporate world hates it.

The NHL is finally getting press and the league is starting to get worried about it because North American sports fan don't seem to like any form of violence. No need for cheap shots -- but I tell you the fans of Pittsburg and Philly are loving this series.
Okay Pittsburg fans not so much.

The fans love it, the players love it and the tv audience is up. What am I missing? Corporations want viewers and are getting it.

I'm curious, didn't the corporate sponsors realize that hockey is a rough sport? Maybe they should have watched a few games before they signed up. Now we're going to have a bunch of suits who know nothing about hockey trying to run things. Hmmm. Actually its not that much different than it is now.

It really showed last night. The games were being reffed to death last night. You could tell the head office wanted the crack down. Not really sure why? Ratings for Pit and Phi have been through the roof. I am watching games that in the past I wouldn't even think about tuning into...the NHL was finally doing something worth watching but it seems that it will not continue.

Don't worry...people still don't realize there is a hockey team in Arizona, Columbus, Florida or that there was ever one in Atlanta!

"I didn't get a harrumph outta that guy!" Gov. William Lepetomaine
They have to pretend that they are outraged over this. This is what happens when suits run the games...regular fans can't afford to go, and everybody gets this mock indignation because someone get checked. The refs aren't calling it, the fans are eating it up, so The Poison Dwarf can step aside and pretend he has to do something. This is another area where NHL fans are far smarter than the rest...WE all know this already.

It's also like the only people who seem outraged by this is the media. I keep reading/hearing about all these bad things and how it is bad for the sport, but if more people are watching, doesn't that mean that the fans actually like it. I don't mind the refs cracking down a little, but I am all for some more brawling in these series.

They could start off right at ice level. When a Cannots Sister can openly aim an elbow at an opponents face and get no call the solution is a long ways away. Where is all this "player respect for each other??" Shea, the Sister, and numerous others are in need of big suspension. I love hard legal hits and willing fight partners. This chickenpoop head hunting has got to go
