09:33 AM ET 04.22 | Here is how we will know about the progress of landing a second NHL team - someday - for the Greater Toronto Area: We won't hear a thing. It will be like that old country song about the ex-girlfriend: If the phone don't ring, you know it's me. Plans for a lush new 20,000-seat arena in Markham, part of Rudy Bratty's Markham Centre development, have been officially presented to town council and after a public meeting Friday, a vote could come as early as next week. If any serious roadblocks arise, they will do so both late and unexpectedly. Officially, the NHL-ready arena is to be called the GTA Centre, at least until its corporate name is sold. If you're a fan of a second team at a privately built arena hard by a GO Train station 25 minutes from downtown Toronto, just sit back and listen. The silence will tell you if it's coming.

Toronto or the GTA could have three teams and still not meet the demand of passionate Hockey Fans in that Market ..

They are building an arena with private funding? Is that allowed?

April 22, 2012  10:47 AM ET

Build an NHL arena and Bettman will move a franchise there...most likely Phoenix...which makes sense..the NHL doesnt need more teams.

Um. How can i put this, The Toronto Maple Leafs. The Maple Leads are one of the original six. They won 13 Stanley cups, haven't won one since 1967. Not to Mention, They have been in the city for almost a hundred years. So, Now is Toronto deserving of a professional hockey team?

That's right...jealous that Winnipeg got one this year, so they want one too.

Who just built an arena. Buttman thinks this will be his big moment on his legacy checklist. He'll go down as one of the worst commishoners ever in any sport no matter what he does in the future. He's done absolutely nothing to help the sport grow.

Toronto 'Yotes or Toronto Blue Jackets?

Highly unusual, but it has happened. In the NFL both Bob Kraft (Patriots) and Jerry Jones (I think?) [Cowboys] have done it.
