Pettitte no longer a luxury, but a necessity

08:13 AM ET 04.23 | It wasn't long ago that the return of Andy Pettitte was served up as a quaint tale that bubbled from Texas, but things are a little different now. [Pettitte's] comeback is rapidly changing from "this could be interesting" to "this could be absolutely necessary." There is no overstating Pettitte's achievements or his standing in the world of the Yankees. But when he announced in mid-March that he was ending his one-year retirement, the Yankees appeared to have a surplus of starting-pitching candidates, as in seven for five spots. But now, it appears that the Yankees might be looking at a deficit, rather than a surplus. ... [Pettitte's return] now looks much more like a requirement than an elective for the Yankees.

They'll be getting a guy who was out of baseball for an entire year. I wouldn't count on his body holding up through the rigors of the season. Anything the Yanks get from him would be gravy.

Pettitte is better now than a lot of Yankee pitchers................Freddy Garcia, anyone ?????

Garcia should not be on any MLB roster . It is sad to see him even try anymore.
DJ Mitchell would be my choice. Move him up in a few weeks. Even Phelps, but not Garcia. Please Joe, let him go.

It's interesting to note that the the World's Richest Baseball Franchise would be looking at a guy who has been retired for a year to save their season. What's baseball coming to?
