Penguins may have to shop Staal

08:19 AM ET 04.24 | The high-powered likes of the Canucks and Red Wings are out, too, but neither lost to a bitter rival the way Sidney Crosby and Pittsburgh did. [The Penguins] must be left wondering how many more shots this group might have before the inevitable tyranny of the salary cap forces change. Crosby and third-line centre Jordan Staal will be entering the final years of their contracts whenever next season rolls around. ... Staal's cap hit is $4 million. It could be that Staal will want to move on a to a place where he can move up in the lineup. If the Penguins can't sign him to an extension, they will have to consider trading him at the deadline rather than lose him for nothing.

Jordan, if you get a call late at night by some drunken irked guy.....hang up, immediately.

Shero can't gamble at the trade deadline if they don't work out an extension.

Why would he do that? Nobody else is going to give him $6+ mil.

Or to trade Crosby??This could get interesting...

Don't see that happening but they probably will think about it. CEC capacity ends in the #87.

No way, they trade #87 or risk trading Malkin. If Sid can't play for health reasons, I do believe he will retire.

Malkin actually worries me a bit though. Staal showed up this playoff series. Malkin didn't, and also showed too many signs of fustration where he got out of hand. Didn't like it.

For a kid entering his prime, it's probably the only thing. Not convinced he could handle #1 duties, though.

He's not a #1 center and I have doubts about him being a #2 center on a good team. He's not a bust, but has never lived up to the hype and potential for a #2 overall. He's never been an all-star, and never actually in the conversation for one, either.

Toews, Backstrom and Kessel were 3,4,5 in that draft. Looking back on it, he is kinda of a bust.

Plays with those scoring dynamos Cooke and Kennedy. Doesn't see much time on the PP. Could be a 30-35 goal scorer, have to wonder if assists would go up if on a 2nd line.

He's not a 30-35 goal scorer, if he was, he would have shown it by now. Plus, I thought Cooke was playing with Crosby this year?

had 29 1 year. 26? this year missing games.

When Sid 1st came back he played with Cooke, then Danny put Sid with Dupuis and Sullivan, and Staal back on the 3rd line.

On a 2nd line with PP time he could easily hit 30-35
