08:20 AM ET 04.24 | The Nicklas Lidstrom watch begins anew. Only he knows for sure, and as is his typical pattern, Lidstrom is playing his cards close to his vest. ... After a season that concluded with him collecting his seventh award as the league's top defenceman, the underlying sense was that there was no reason for him to walk away from the game. This year, there are subtle signs that this might be it for the Detroit leader. According to sources close to Lidstrom and Holland, there have been mild suggestions that Lidstrom is plotting a course away from Hockeytown. His son has told friends that he hasn't registered for minor hockey next fall. Holland has allowed quietly to insiders that perhaps this might be Lidstrom's swan song.

If so he's one of the greatest Red Wings I ever saw play.... 2nd only to Stevie Y.

I'm starting to think the sooner he goes, the better for the Wings. Allows them to truly begin rebuilding their D .

Oh c'mon FN....you know you're salivating over running the countless "will he or won't he" threads you'll run ad nauseum until the puck drops next October.

The Preds will want to keep Weber. They can't let both of them go.

The Preds won't have the cash to keep all their free agents. I think they have 12 unrestricted and 6 restricted. Suter's gone...and if Lids retires, the wings will be a lock to get him. And they have a great shot at Parise too.

Canuck eh?

Let me guess you are a wings fan. The wings a lock to get him, but why not the other 29 teams? What makes Suter a lock to go to the wings? And why would Parise go there too?

Agreed. At least he CAN walk away under his own power and on his own terms. He's earned the right to do whatever he wishes.
He's been great and, he'll be missed but, it's time to move on. I think he stays with the organization in some capacity. Assistant coach to work with young D-men?

They can't keep Weber AND Suter. They'll have to flip a coin on who goes and who stays.

At this point, it might wind up being btwn two teams that miss the playoffs.

Yep. Gonna force the Wings to get younger players. Not that they need help. They know how to rebuild quickly.

great great player. If he doesn't retire he should accept a hometown discount like Yzerman did. that way they can hit the free agent market. $5M is too much even for Lidstrom.
