08:17 AM ET 04.25 | Capitals and Bruins fans knew their series was close, but this close? Why wouldn't the closest, most tightly-contested playoff matchup the NHL has ever seen end up in a nail-biting, gut-wrenching, heartstopping Game 7? Did you expect anything less? Really? According to the Elias Sports Bureau, never before has there been a Stanley Cup post-season series in which the first six games were each decided by a single goal prior to this first-round clash between the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals. Chicago and Phoenix had the opportunity to equal that mark in their Game 6 on Monday after the first five games had been one-goal decisions. But Phoenix's 4-0 series-clinching win squashed that possibility.

I would not have guessed this series would play out like this, but it just goes to show what a hot goaltender (see: Holtby and Smith) can do in any series

What hockey expert would have predicted this outcome?

Tonight's game can't come soon enough for me.

Yea drop the puck now! It has been a really good series. Most people seemed to be looking beyond with boston in 5 or something.
I still shudder whenever people end up sitting on Holtby. They showed Neuvirth on the bench but im not sure id want to see how playoff ready he is in a game 7.

Those that predicted the Bruins in 5 or 6.

Got to give the Caps credit for being more consistent in their play than during the regular season.

I know just having a little fun since the same 'experts' predicted a Pittsburgh/Vancouver final

I think they are more confident knowing they have Holtby playing in net.

I've got to give the Caps credit for playing some solid defense. Semin is even chipping in in the backchecking department.

a lot of folks on these very threads looked to this eries as the whitewash I think.

I often wonder when I see these types of games is it good defence, or just crappy play with the puck. This has truly been the former

Thought the same thing reading this.......and I think we all posted/discussed a few weeks back about Washington skidding into the dance sideways and barely making it.....then Holtby jumps in goal.....and is hot.....

Why we love playoff hockey

A lot of good hockey so far. Caps-Boston, NY-Ottawa, Flyers-Pitt (well maybe not 'good' hockey but exciting as heck for sure) and NJ-Fla. And that's just the East! Knuckle nibbling time for sure. Had I tried to choose the winners by bracket, a la NCAA, I'd have a perfect record. I wouldn't have picked any of it right!

Absolutely. They are doing a great job especially in their own zone. It makes me wonder, why all of sudden they have a commitment to play defense. Maybe they know they have a goalie who can get the job done.

I'm also glad the Caps are going to game 7 because tonight the Baby Pens can sweep the Hershey Bears in a best out of 5 series. The Baby Pens also picked up Tangradi, Strait and Despres from the now humbled Pens.

The Caps did kind of leave the Bears without any goaltenders as they enter the playoffs
