Cashman shoulders blame for pitching problems

08:16 AM ET 04.26 | The return of Andy Pettitte just became a whole lot more important to the Yankees, who found out that Michael Pineda needs shoulder surgery, leading the pinstripe faithful to think of Brian Cashman's acquisitions of Carl Pavano, Kei Igawa, A.J. Burnett and Jeff Weaver. Fans are already screaming that the Mariners suckered him into trading them Jesus Montero for what amounted to damaged goods. ... "It comes with the territory," he said. "I'm proud of my accomplishments, and I'm accountable for my failures. This is on my watch. I own it. I hope there will be a time in the future when Yankee fans will feel better about the trade. The doctors are optimistic. But I understand that right now the trade doesn't look good."

Hard to disagree. He is to blame and the starters are a mess. Hughes is bullpen fodder on a good day and Freddy is done. At some point just bring up DJ Mitchell and throw the kid. Andy? really? those days are over.

One has to wonder though if the issue happened last year when Pineda started struggling with the Mariners in the 2nd half.

It's good for Cashman to take the high road, and they may not have legitimately known there was an issue on either side, but there seemed to be a warning. They are reliant on the pitcher to tell the trainers about problems and that didn't happen.

Pitchers seem more fragile than 500 year old bone china at this point.

Shoulder issues are scary too.
