Ovi again missing from action

08:26 AM ET 04.26 | The No. 8 has become a hard number to spot for the Caps this playoff season. Perhaps it's just the nature of being the NHL's highest-paid player, but Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin gets noticed even when he's not on the ice. Much like most of this series, his frequent absence was rather glaring. Ovechkin received 16:25 minutes of ice time of the Capitals' 2-1 overtime win in Game 7 against the Boston Bruins. ... For some, the Capitals' results are impressive enough that Dale Hunter will be lauded for courageously parking his star on the bench (particularly when Washington was in the lead). Yet with three more rounds to win, the obvious question is: can the Capitals go deep with this strategy?

Perhaps a more well rested Ovi against a less defense oriented team is the strategy Hunter is using. I could envision Ovi shredding the less than stellar defense that the Flyers exhibited in round 1.

Crazy that the east has the potential to have every top seeded team go out.

Congrats to the Caps' fans, especially Chip and Slap. To the Bruins' fans, there isn't an emotion you guys are feeling, I/we Pens' can't validate.

Interesting playoffs so far.

God help the team Ovi shows up against. Chara and Co. did a good job shutting him down.

Speaking of Chara, and I am not making fun of him, and I didn't see the incident, but who or what gave him the Irish Sunglasses?

Thank you DWI. The series obviously was as close as it could be and could easily have gone the other way with a bounce here or there. Thomas and the Bruins played well defensively, but so did our guys. I was very proud of Holtby. Having seen him in Hershey quite a bit I was not surprised that he could play well. But I was surprised he could play that well, against the Cup champs under so much pressure with so little experience. As Durk said, this is a crazy playoff season in the Eastern Conference so far. I'll be watching the games tonight with more interest and a regular heartbeat for a change.

I've been through the disappointment that Pens fans are feeling, oh, about 37 times. Hopefully we'll have realignment, a new CBA and no work stoppages for next year. In the meantime, I'm enjoying the playoffs at least for a few hours!

Your guys played a defensive game I don't think I have seen from them in a long, long time. They were hungry. You could see it. They deserved to win, no doubt.

That being said, I don't think the Bs played to their full potential, but that's been the story in these playoffs.

And don't think I am going to give the Caps much love, so take it while you can get it. ;)

April 26, 2012  09:14 AM ET

It looks like Caps management has developed enough confidence in the team that they feel they can win with or without Ovie. Of course, having a hot goaltender sure helps.

LMAO. BTW, congrats to the Bruins too for a great series and the classy way they played at home and on the road. Both teams can be proud of the way they played under constant pressure. I was unaware that this was the closest series ever in the playoffs......all one goal, so many OTs....I need the rest as much as the players.

Ha! I expect we'll be sort of like the Hatfields and McCoys in 6 months or less!

Thanks hbomb. We can both agonize over the Redskins! Hope RGIII is worth the uproar he's causing!

April 26, 2012  09:38 AM ET

also the Caps parked Ovi on the BLO line......wasnt he skating primarily with Brouwer and Laich the whole series?????

The Caps tight checking game was a legitimate surprise.

Thank you. The Caps played an excellent series and, (choke, choke) Hunter devised a system that worked against the Bruins (oh, that hurt). Granted, the Bruins had issues with Bergeron being hurt, difficult to win games when you can't win faceoffs in such a close series. Not making excuses at all. I would not be surprised to read of Lucic being injured, he seemed listless and off his game throughout the series. I will go with my previous comments concerning Winter Classic participants and Stanley Cup winners and say Washington wins the Cup. That would be good news for New York and Philly for next year.
