Gov. Malloy goes back to bashing NCAA

08:22 AM ET 04.27 | Gov. Dannel P. Malloy took the occasion of a capitol visit with UConn players to jab, again, at the NCAA. "My position hasn't changed," said Malloy, who has been critical of the NCAA's decision to ban UConn from the 2013 NCAA Tournament because of past academic problems. "They want to have the highest [academic] standards, and we support that -- we also want extremely high standards. But no one else would make a rule and apply it retroactively. I don't think the public understands that." ... UConn's remaining hope to avoid a 2013 postseason ban, which would also include the Big East tournament, lies with the Committee on Academic Progress. The committee meets in July, when policy changes regarding the use of more recent grades will be discussed.

Governor, let's get some things straight.
The NCAA is the creature of College/University Presidents who elect it's Governing Board from among themselves and Athletic Directors. The Board selects the Commissionar, and establishes policies.
Since Presidents and Athletic Directors like to keep their high-paying jobs, they do what their Boards of Trustees want, and what most of them want in Division I is winning football and basketball teams that keep alumni happy and contributing to the schools.
Thus, don't blame some anonomous "NCAA", look to UCONN's President and Athletic Director and ask them, "How come you allow this"?
The NCAA is doing what it is supposed to do, promoting intercollegiate athletic competition and slapping down those schools that cheat blatantly and outrageously, but looking the other way on the majority who cheat on the rules but do so very carefully and keep a low profile.

Gee, Gov., maybe instead you should make sure you get that new liquor bill passed to fill your tax coffers and let the NCAA do its job. Your present comments only serve to enable UConn's low standards for its student-athletes.

What med school is Maurice Clarett attending?
