09:37 AM ET 04.29 | People are taking shots at the Seahawks for taking Bruce Irvin in the first round, but the truth is if they didn't take him someone else would have. Among the teams that coveted him were the Texans and Chargers. Word around the league is the 49ers liked him so much they might have traded up for him. Part of what helped Irvin overcome his questionable character stigma is he wrote a personal email to each of the 32 teams a little more than one week before the draft. It was a letter than came from the heart and was not edited by his handlers. Irvin admitted making mistakes and said he has grown from them, and asked the NFL to give him a chance.

"If they didn't take him someone else would have".
This sounds like deer hunting logic: "If I didn't shoot that <little> buck someone else would have".

I think we now have a new defense for our Court system. " Your honor, while it is true I have had some character issues in the past, i have written you a personal email about it and I am now a new man."

Yes, we should all be so impressed by this grand effort to show that he is a new man.

I hope he is sincere and that he makes the best of his chance. What really surprised me was Jeff Fisher drafting Janoris Jenkins after having had to deal with PacMan Jones in Tennessee.

Yes, but at least the NFL Network shows a high level of integrity by employing such stellar athletes as analysts.

I wish him luch but question so much of this. A personal email carries about as much weight as an apologetic text, except he's not limited to character space. Seriously? No assistance from his "handlers". Was that determination made because spell check wasn't used before hitting send?

It wasn't an email it was a letter, the media always make things seem bigger what it is believe i know. True this young man has been through a lot and made mistakes along the way. How many of us has made mistakes, No on knows about ours because we are not in the spotlight. I have watch this man grow from a boy to a man and I am very proud at what he has become. I will love him regardless. This is coming from someone who knows and been there. Bruce Irvin's' godmother. I am tired of the media dogging my baby.

Wow, Mick...while I am in the camp that says that NO team needs a player with character issues the scope of which Irvin is reported to have, that's pretty harsh. The Seahawks SHOULD have stayed at #12 and taken David DeCastro IMO. We'll see how it works out for Pete and John.
