Owners forcing GMs' realignment votes?

10:02 AM ET 04.29 | Under the NHL's proposed realignment, the Rangers, Devils, Flyers and Caps all would play in the same conference, meaning two of the four teams that have advanced to the Eastern semis (otherwise known as the Patrick Division Reunion) would necessarily have been eliminated in the first round had they all qualified for the playoffs. By the way, we're told two general managers/governors who spoke against the plan when it was presented at the Board meeting cast votes in favor of it under orders from owners getting their marching orders from Gary Bettman.

Would make for some great playoff hockey. See Pens/Flyers

The owners are getting their marching orders from the Buttgoblin. That is one scary thought. Hopefully its just the New York Post's hallucination.

By the way interns, we don't really need a photo of the Buttgoblin.

Maybe I've got the Sunday slows but don't those 4 teams play in the same conference now? And don't half the teams get eliminated in the first round? WTF?

Only difference is that in the first round division teams will play each other rather than the current system of seeding 1-8.

Thanks H but didn't that happen anyway with Flyers/Pens?

April 29, 2012  10:28 AM ET

Wait, don't they already play in the same conference? It's the seeding that make the difference. None of this "first place automatically get's in the playoffs" stuff. Top 8 in points. Other than getting Winnipeg out of the S.E. Division and Phoenix into the East when they move to Quebec, not much needs to be done. Is the mighty troll over thinking this a bit?

Sort of The plan I saw was 2 divisions in each conference with only the top 4 teams in each making the playoffs. The Caps wouldn't have made the playoffs this year in a division with Rangers,Flyers,Pens and Devils.

So good old Larry is talking about 'divisions' and not 'conferences?'

I believe so. It would suck for the Caps to miss the Playoffs with the 5th best record in the "Patrick reunion" division, while possibly 2 or 3 teams with worse records make it in the "to be named later" divisions.

My bad here H. I went and looked it up and didn't realize there would be 4 conferences and no divisions. I see what he means but 'good' teams miss the playoffs every year. Hardly a story.

They might want to make sure everyone is staying put for awhile before all this realign stuff.

April 29, 2012  11:31 AM ET

If this realignment happened Washington wouldn't have even made the playoffs. That's first thing. It would have been Rangers vs Devils and Flyers vs Pens, and you would have had some weaker teams in the other division making it. Just leave things alone NHL. It's fine. STOP IT

Too many teams make the playoffs now. Cut the number from eight to four in each conference - then you're doing something. Do the same in all sports. Basketball and baseball. I know that will NEVER happen (baseball is actually adding a team in each league this year) but that's what I'd like to see.

Its a good idea, but like you said won't happen. Its all about the Benjamins. Money talks and . . .

It really doesn't matter in hockey which position or conference you are in just look at this years playoffs.
