Holmgren: Vikings didn't dupe Browns

10:40 AM ET 04.29 | Browns President Mike Holmgren disputed a report that the Browns got fooled into trading up to No. 3 with the Vikings to draft Trent Richardson. Mike Freeman of cbsports.com reported Friday that several team executives told him the Vikings were bluffing in regards to multiple teams trying to trade up to No. 3 to draft the Alabama running back. Freeman reported that the Browns were the only team to buy the fake, giving up fourth, fifth and seventh-round picks to move up one spot. "Contrary to what was written and said yesterday, we had to compete,'' said Holmgren. "We weren't the Lone Ranger in that deal.'' Vikings general manager Rick Spielman told ESPN Friday morning that multiple teams were after the pick, even hours before the draft. But Holmgren also stressed that he urged general manager Tom Heckert and coach Pat Shurmur not to let Richardson slip away.

So, it's inappropriate to use the smoke and mirrors and deception during the draft, but play-action passing, trick plays, and other similar sneaky plays are allowed during games? What the hell? If the Browns got duped into making the trade, then good job to the Vikes. It's all part of winning the game.

I just hope that TR is a better "all around" running back than what Holmgren drafted out of Bama (Alexander) a few years back!!!! Shaun was a pretty good running back, but he couldn't/wouldn't catch the ball out of the backfield and he had a great OG and OT to lead the way.

Geesh Oldtimer.
Alexander won the league's MVP and set a record for touchdowns scored.
Forgive the guy for not walking on water.

I'm just saying that even if he was a "good" running back he never was a great one, he had a very good OT and OG when he won the MVP and scored all those TDs. If you followed his career with the Seahawks, you would see that he very seldom caught the ball out of the backfield. I'm just saying that he was a good RB, but not great. I'm just hoping that TR will be a better "all around" back than was Alexander. Check out Shaun's stats after Hutch left in 2006, after Shaun one very good year..

LOL, okay Shaun had "one" very good year with great blocking on the left side, which he ran most of the time behind Jones and Hutch. Does the Browns have a good O line????

Who cares? The Browns gave a fourth, fifth and 7th. It's another thing if they gave up their 22nd or 2nd rounder. We started with 13 freaking picks for crying out loud. This ensured us the best running back to come out in a long time. Geez.

They got what they wanted. "best running back in a long time?" They say that every year, that is why the Saints moved up last year, took the RB from Alabama and got about 450 yards from him.
Look, the browns are lousy at passing the ball so you try to get better at something. good for them.

I agree, "IF" the Browns have the O line, then TR will be good!!!!

And by not seriously considering a WR early, they intend to keep it that way.

Not so sure about that. They picked the biggest arm in the draft, albeit a 28 yo arm, that can throw a 96 mph fastball. Then they picked a little sprinter, who could likely 100 yd dash to death any DB in the league. They've picked 75 or so other WRs in the last few years; I presume that at least a few of them can catch and run short routes. Not saying that they just became the best passing offense in the NFL, but I think they very likely just got better.

The Browns "does" now, or should. Right tackle spot has been weak, which is why they drafted a right tackle. They've had the best left tackle in the league for a few years now.
