Green Bay's 'pathetic' draft approach

08:08 AM ET 04.30 | Ted Thompson may be going crazy, after all. It's the first time in team history the Packers have used their first six picks in a draft on defense. That Thompson was willing to trade away four picks to make sure he got the defensive players he'd targeted is the ultimate indictment of the pass defense's performance in 2011. "It's horrible," Thompson joked about entering the draft with 12 picks and leaving with only eight players. "I felt about as ashamed -- I'm not my father's son anymore, because my father's very frugal. It's pathetic. But in this case, I felt like it was appropriate. I felt like we had a good, solid team, and I felt like, where we felt like we were getting quality, we should try to do it. So we made three trades up."

Is this the best draft story they could find?

Eight players who make the team are worth a lot more than 12 players who don't. Good teams make the right moves on draft day. That's one reason they're good teams.

Nah, I think the interns title the FN threads, until the lead intern gets in around lunch time.

It looks like a sarcasm font would be handy at the top of the threads, too.

Well hell, I thought They were going to look for competition fro Rodgers , Jennings, and Nelson. I have no problem with their draft, they addressed their need, D. Perry is going to be OLB, Worthy at DE, and they got some good secondary help.

I wish the Redskins would draft as badly as the Pack.

Not very interesting at first until you consider the Packers's draft history. Thompson and his predecessors are known for trading down and accumulating picks. For the Pack to trade up, it really is a departure from their MO. I think they rarely walk away from a draft with less than 10 picks.

I like the debt they added tot he offensive line, but the Kirk Cousins pickup was weird, considering we could have addressed other needs.

Some of those o-line picks were a little shaky, but at least they were targetting a need. I agree taking Cousins was strange, but he'll get a year to learn the ropes as the emergency QB while Grossman keeps the clipboard warm. Hopefully he'll develop to the point they can get some value for him later.

RGIII is hopefully going to be the man, but Skins also thought Shuler would be and drafted Gus in a later round.

The Pats have the same history in recent years, and this year they too adopted the opposite philosophy. And, like the Pack, they used it to pick up the defensive players they wanted, rather than settling for what was available a few picks later.
Both the Pats and the Pack are good teams who will be keeping most of their starters from last season. So, they don't need a lot of new players, just some carefully-chosen guys to fill holes at a few weak positions.
