Could Crawford cost Boston Ellsbury?

08:13 AM ET 04.30 | These days, Carl Crawford is persona non grata in Red Sox Nation, where a $142 million investment, to date, looks misspent. Boston has played 183 games since signing Crawford. He has appeared in 130, many of them injured, with a .289 on-base percentage and a .255 batting average, a far cry from his career numbers. ... There has been speculation that the Crawford signing could cost the Red Sox Jacoby Ellsbury when he becomes a free agent at the end of the 2014 season, since that might require more than $40 million per year tied up in center and left field. Baseball operations folks look back to September 2009, when Epstein claimed Jose Bautista on waivers from Toronto and had the deal set, only to have ownership kill it.

That's right. It's called quantitative easing, MLB style.

Bautista's not lookin that great right now either. Or since last August, for that matter.

Of course, he's only got 4 years left on his deal, for a fraction of the cost, whereas Crawford, well...

True, I think they could/will keep Ellsbury just like the Phillies will pony up the money to keep Hamels. My question is do the Sawx really want to get him back? He is an OUTSTANDING OF when healthy but this cat seems to be made of glass, maybe a 'sell high' strategy would be the call and let him fall to pieces on someone else's dime...................

I'll give him a pass this year. It's not his fault 190 lbs of opposing player dropped onto his shoulder causing the injury.

Well, if he'd stop playing the game so hard, and hurling himself into walls, and other players ... well wait, then he wouldn't be the awesome player he is! I don't think he's made of glass, he just has no fear!

Morning dear.

Good morning! I want Ellsbury to stay! I just bought an Ellsbury t-shirt around St. Patrick's Day!

I want him to stay as well. I like his abilities. But they will have to deal with Boras.

so clearly he's a free agent after this season, right? Wait, not until after the 2014 season..... non-story. More immediately, they need to fix the pitching staff.
