D-Will defends Wall, rips Wizards and McGee

08:09 AM ET 05.01 | For his part, John Wall believes he was "kind of the same" player in his sophomore season. Many league observers believe that the environment in Washington -- before the Wizards traded away the mercurial JaVale McGee and Nick Young to get veteran big man Nene, and sent home Andray Blatche -- wasn't conducive to allowing Wall to fulfill his potential. "He's a had a tough cast down there. I don't want to put anybody down but he's not playing with the smartest guys in the world," New Jersey Nets all-star guard Deron Williams said about Wall. "That's tough, man. That's tough. They're not smart. I've been watching. JaVale McGee was on the Not So Top 10, like, 50 times this year."

where a team drafts you is irrelevant to you being a leader. top picks used to be 3 or 4 year college players, men or bordering on men.
wall was a spoiled 1 year college player, a kid. he doesnt know how to play basketball. talent is not knowledge not leadership.
larry, michael, magic, they basically did nothing exceptional in their first 2 or 3 years of college. they were kids. they stuck around, grew up and learned how to lead BEFORE they took the job.
not faulting wall for taking the money. but nba teams no longer draft for nba-ready players. they draft for potential.
so you cant have the same realistic expectations for an talented but unskilled, untrained, non-leader, kid, vs skilled, highly trained leader, who were grown men when they entered the league.
he may learn.
but the fact is that he is (was?) a kid with no training to play at the nba level, he was stuck on a team with no one else that knew how to play nba caliber ball and no willingness to learn (spoiled rich kids with no incentive and questionable intelligence), with a coach(es) that dont
know how to coach or teach these players and bring them along even if they did WANT to learn the game, and a management who seems totally inept.
as a side note, now that jordan is gone from the wizards maybe they can regroup.
trading away a bunch of slackers and bringing in nene, along with some other late season quality moves may have given the wizards some hope. they truly played well down the stretch, actually like a real nba team. next season could be interesting for them.
now if the bobcats could only get rid of................... so we could make some quality moves.

Injuries hasn't helped him much either.
BUT you cannot discount the environment playing a part. Imagine Wall playing alongside someone like Billups or Ray or Timmy or Grant Hill, you don't think his NBA maturity will be a LOT better?
It's same like family upbringing. If parents are potheads, kids cannot be too much different (in most cases)

McGee makes them look like geniuses.
Yeah, they played against many teams resting players but the Wizards still ended the season on a 6-game winning streak. Wall shouldn't have to tell his teammates not to sprint back on defense when the Wizards have the ball and a fresh shot clock.

Look at the rosters and coaches for the the other "elite young pg's", has a better supporting cast than Wall. Irving, Curry, Teague, Rose, Collison, Conley, Rubio, Jennings, Westbrook, Holiday. A couple of them are stars, the others are not doing much better than Wall if at all. You can't just ignore rosters and team dysfunction and say he should make the team better. The Wiz had no other player in danger of being an all star (Nene just got to the team), or being called a team leader. And every good or great team had more than one leader. The Wiz as an organization has not been very professional.

I absolutely agree. The only thing wall makes a case for is a guy with talent who is clearly not "the guy". Talented, yes. Leader, Hell No!

I'm inclined to agree, but I can't go all in with this. Why? Because most of the players you describe are playing in the D-League. Players like... Gerald Green, who finally realized that hops and attitude doesn't cut it in the big leagues. While it's true that alot of N.B.A. players, are spoiled and self-absorbed, they are products of a system that feeds their sense of entitlement and absolves them of their failings. Tell me this isn't true...
Now put yourself in their shoes and imagine how you might turn out... Not knowing what you know today. This isn't to absolve them from taking responsibility for their progression as men and athletes (ironic huh, *laughs*), but you can't absolve the system that created them either.
