The next Welker (but better?)

08:02 AM ET 05.02 | Dallas fifth-round pick, receiver Danny Coale, said Tuesday that he likes lining up both inside and outside, and that, yes, he's heard the comparisons to Wes Welker. [But] Coale has a better skill set. Welker is 5-9, 185 and his 40 time was 4.6. Coale is 6-0, 200 and he ran in the 4.3s for his 40 time. That should excite everyone who has watched the production of Welker in the NFL. The Cowboys believe Coale can excel as a slot receiver but has the physical skills and speed to also play outside. He???ll compete for the team???s No. 3 receiver position that came open when Laurent Robinson signed with Jacksonville. For sure, Coale will contribute immediately on special teams and could become the Cowboys??? gunner on the punt defense unit.

Stupid comparison. It's not like Coale is going to have Brady throwing to him either.

Yup. Speed isn't the thing that makes Welker great. He and Brady make the same reads at the same time. And Welker is tough. He gets really clobbered several times a game. That's another aspect of being a slot receiver that wasn't discussed.

That's a lot of bluster over a 5th round pick.

The press likes to say these things... "He's a white receiver. The next Wes Welker! Boom! Done! Next story."

May 2, 2012  08:20 AM ET

They both, notably, did not catch potentially game changing passes in their last game of the season.

What, we all look alike?

May 2, 2012  08:22 AM ET

Yes, Hatrunner and I actually ARE twins.

May 2, 2012  08:24 AM ET

There have been countless number of slot receivers with a "better skill set" than Wes Welker, but very few if any with his production. Dumb story.

I think I like your pose a little better tho.

This is the kind of dumb story you get when your team hasn't had a good player at a certain position for a while. They start stretching for anything.

A diva like Welker ?

The hits he take remind me of Wayne Crebet.... Hope he doesn't have the same ending, but very reminiscent.

Isn't this like a new parent saying "my baby's gonna be the next president"? A little premature comparification?

I was horrified, however, that we showed up today wearing the same outfit.

This is news. 31 other teams compared him to Wanda Welker , the girl at the drive through window at Wendy's . She checks in at 5'8" 205 lbs. and can run the forty in 4.45 if you try to drive away before paying.

Wanda should be thrilled. With measurables like those, I don't expect her to get stiffed any other way.
