Courts could delay suspensions for years

08:01 AM ET 05.03 | Roger Goodell came down hard Wednesday on players involved in the Saints' bounty scandal. [But] be sure of one thing: As quickly as Goodell might want to resolve this, the wheels of justice tend to be slow. Slow enough that one attorney with knowledge of the case said he believes the suspensions of current and former Saints players Jonathan Vilma, Will Smith, Scott Fujita and Anthony Hargrove aren't months away from being decided. Try years. "This is going to be complex on multiple levels," said the attorney, who declined to be identified. "On one side you're going to have all the attorneys for the players and every argument they're going to throw out there; the discovery process ... it's going to be a mess."

If the courts get involved, the whole thing becomes a travesty. The suspensions must be immediate or they will have no effect.

Vilma is 30 years old. How many years does he have left? The courts could drag this out until after he retires.

Wait... So more FN articles on this for years ?

The last Saints player suspended, for PEDS ( star caps ) retired before he had to serve his time off.

Goodell also announced a 4 game suspension for James Harrison, just because he was on a roll and felt like it.

Not enough players were suspended - EVERYONE that took place in the pool should get a full year off w/o pay. It's too bad that the Saints get off so lightly. After all, 3 of the 4 players aren't even with them anymore.

The NFLPA will drag this sucker out for years to show the players that they are getting (union dues) what they are paying for and we the fans get screwed by not having this over with. Whats the point of having the Commissioner and his office and contracts that when the contract is clearly broken, things are final and done, its just another ruse by the NFLPA.

I think you hit the nail on the head. The NFLPA is all about ensuring players get paid so their coffers can get filled in return. Any other considerations are secondary.

What makes you think FN will be here that long?

The quality articles that the FN interns put out each day. It's going to take them years to master their tradecraft.

How far do you want to go? Plenty of other teams in the NFL have done some form of the bounty system (according to many current and past players) over the years. The 'bounty pool' is much bigger than just the Saints organization.

Yep... Which is even more reason for the former players suing the NFL to be damned sure to include the NFLPA in their court action.

The union doesn't give one damn about player safety. Any statements to the contrary are Bulsh!

Well said !

how is this even possible..? if you work for a company(like the NFL) you have to follow the rules, and if you dont there are repercussions, getting written up, getting unpaid leave, or getting fired, none of which goes to an appeal process, so why should this be any different. Its not like there is still a question of weather or not they did it... these guys make millions to PLAY a sport, play by the rules.

What will happen after the lawyers bankrupt the NFLPA. Then again maybe that has been the plan all along.

Very simple outcome, all the judges need to do to make a determination is watch the movie "A Few Good Men" Nicholsons character is represented by the New Orleans management and coaching. The 2 soldiers that are on trial for murder are represented by the ( 4 players being suspended). They followed orders to do something that is morally wrong to do, they may not have dreamed up bounty-gate but they participated.
