08:26 AM ET 05.03 | Marc Bergevin may have some cleaning to do -- housecleaning, that is. The Montreal Canadiens are poised to eat Scott Gomez's rich contract, according to reports out of La Belle Province. The Canadiens plan to buy out the remaining two years on the deal that that owes Gomez another $10 million. According to the current collective bargaining agreement, they'd have to pay the under-achieving forward two-thirds of the salary cap hit ($7.3 million annually) to get out from under the seven-year, $51 million deal he signed with the New York Rangers in 2007. By buying Gomez out, the Canadiens could spread his remaining cap hit over four years, rather than two.

The sooner they cut ties to Gomez the better. Why can't they "Wade Redden" him to the minors?

I heard (and pardon my ignorance) that there might be a clause in the new CBA that gives teams/management a one time "pass" to deal with mistakes like Gomez, and say, MARTIN! For instance, and again, I am fuzzy here, so pardon, but management could buy out their contracts, get rid of them, and it NOT be counted against the cap. Again, I may have some of that wrong.

who knows what the heck Fehr will come up with.
I never understood why a buyout would be counted against the cap anyway. Let me rephrase that...after 2 seasons, you should be allowed to "fire" the guy

I don't get that either. They have money to burn. They should at least wait to see what the new CBA is and see if they do what they did last time and let you erase a salary. It would be stupid to do it now. Stupid like trading for Gomez stupid.

Ageed....they maybe able to just drop him and his ridiculous contract. Why do it now? It's not like they couldn't do this right before next season.

I'm wondering if this is a line that is going to be drawn in the sand with the new CBA.

I don't know about that....but the d sure looked pretty good most of the night . There were some howlers....I wasn't trained as a d-man, but as a goalie I know you NEVER pass the puck in front of your own net...ESPECIALLY with Ovie lurking

this is on the table and I think that it is a relative certainty that it will get passed. the word out is that there are quite a few teams that are stumping for it because they have bad contracts and all of the gm's are sort of lock step in this because it will allow them down the road to have a mulligan in their back pockets.
