08:21 AM ET 05.04 | So much for a long fuse. One day after he talked about his patience as a manager, Dale Sveum reached his limit with combustible closer Carlos Marmol. The Cubs manager appears on the verge of demoting his $20 million closer after another walk-filled ninth inning that blew a three-run lead and cost a chance at their first winning road trip in a year. "There's definitely a thought of it now, I can't lie to you," Sveum said after Marmol failed to retire any of the five batters he faced Thursday to ruin the dominant return from the disabled list by Ryan Dempster. Sveum said James Russell -- the only left-hander in his bullpen -- and rookie Rafael Dolis are the options he would consider.

Sveum is probably wondering what he's gotten himself into managing the Cubs.

Now is the time to trade Marmol to the Yankees. They have his pitching coach from the years when he was dominant. Just take his salary off the book and be done with him.

Sveum is forced to wait out the deadbeat contracts, and Soriano and Marmol top the list. Marmol no longer belongs on a major league roster after being a very good reliever as few as two years ago. He is beyond the point of no return. He never remotely has a clue where his slider is going and also has no confidence in his own fastball. He is purely bad comedy to watch. Sveum is naturally held responsible for leaving him in after he walked the first two batters with his slider flying in every which direction. Sveum just sits there like a dope on a stump taking it all in. Sveum will still probably keep sending him back out there due to his massive contract

Yeah, but I doubt that Sveum has bothered to even take notice

And Sveum is surprised by the state of the Cubbies? Whoa......

Like you said, only so much he can do.

You have what you have. I suspect money isn't an issue with Dale. Like ChiSoxFan notes, you play the hand dealt. If there is a better option in the bullpen, he'll soon be out there. It'll take a while to break down this team far enough that it can be intelligently rebuilt. Looks like the Red Sox are about to make some of those same kinds of decisions soon, too.

I want to blame Marmol a lot! But..being a former college closer, I blame everybody that is associated with him as a player. Nobody seems to work with the guy. He falls off the mound to the left on every pitch, his release point is never the same, he flies open on his delivery, he has never developed a third pitch to get lefties out(they tee off on him when he does throw strikes), he's lost confidence over the years and they keep throwing him out there in hopes he can figure it out. Frankly, I'm amazed he hasn't had shoulder problems yet. Managers/pitching coaches still coach in the MLB's don't they?

when the closer,, close his own door towards the oportunities,,, that respective closer, shouldn't expect any better credibilities as a closer,,,,,

How can you assume that no one has ever tried to work with him? His mechanics are so flawed it is difficult for anyone to correct them. He is a lost little puppy similar to Dontrell Willis. He has five pitches. Ball one, ball two, ball three, ball four, wild pitch. He rarely throws his fastball because he can't locate it any better than his slider plus he has no confidence in it. It used to be when he threw strikes he couldn't be hit. Now he is commonly hit with regularity. And shoulder problems would be the best solution for him yet, it would at least remove him from the roster

Uh huh, I predicted they'd lose 100 games this season. They look a bit better than that...but they still might.

Yeah, but you know how that is....when guys get to that level they don't take too kindly when coaches say they are doing *THAT* much incorrectly, ahah hah.

You think Jered Weaver wouldn't tell a coach he's psycho or to shut up for telling him that throwing across his body like he does needs to be changed? Am surprised Weaver hasn't hurt his arm, and who's to say he won't.

Point is I think some guys are uncoachable at all levels of the game, I've had experience with some of them. ; )

I'm surprised that Mr. Know-it-all Kruhill didn't mention that Bosio spent all spring training teaching Marmol how to throw a two seam fastball, What a waste of time. Marmol always shakes it off. Bosio should have tried to stop Marmol from throwing his body off the mound and a finding a stable release point.

I also surprised that Sveum went with Marmol as his closer this year. Didn't he watch the films from last year and notice that Marmol was tied for the most blown saves last years with 10?

Any manager that bases playing time on contracts rather than performance deserves to be fired!

I am also fed up with Carlos Marmol. 2 years ago he had the most electric stuff in the league. Now he's just lost on the mound. Time to move on...
