10:05 AM ET 05.06 | Former National Football League star Junior Seau's family is revisiting its plans for research on the brain of the retired linebacker, who killed himself in his California home on Wednesday, a pastor for the family said on Saturday. The family's pastor, Shawn Mitchell said on Friday the family had decided Seau's brain would be examined for evidence of repetitive injuries from his playing days. "They have now stepped back from what they were thinking initially," Mitchell said on Saturday when asked about the family's plans for Seau's brain. "Nothing is definite right now."

Difficult and sensitive topic to broach with family at this time. Players need to commit to this prior to something like this. Maybe the NFL should initiate a program that promotes such studies after death.

Agreed. Players who feel they might be at risk should consider making a living will, discuss all the issues with their family, so everyone can be in agreement should the worst happen.

very difficult decision especially when multiple places want the brain, a will would make it a little easier on the family

Maybe the NFL is lobbying the family to reconsider because of the negative press the continue to receive for failing to address these issues sooner and the money they could be forced to pay out.

And as long as there aren't studies, nobody has to take any responsibility. That's all that the retired players are really looking for. Merrile Hoge can call that one for yo.

Who can argue with a case like that? The idea is that establishing a timeline for the head traumas to the depression/other conditions allows medicine to determine a proper course of action in treatments. How many undocumented head traumas have resulted in dimentia or other brain deteriorations? Football happens to be high profile and calls attention to serious conditions that may not otherwise receive the necessary funding for research.

You're dealing with a big gap in player generations. You go back 20 or 30 years and players didn't receive the contracts that they do now. Players started negotiating the larger contracts when they realized they weren't being looked after. They were nothing more than gladiators for the rich owners who got richer off the players' backs. Those are the guys that this is important for; not for the ones that blow their money on 200 pair of Air Jordans.

Thats why I took the decisions out of my family's hands. Everything is paid for and my wishes for my remains is all spelled out so there is no question about what I want.

IMO studying the brain after known impacts might help in finding ways to better treat a person after having trauma to the head.
