Why Angels benched Pujols

10:27 AM ET 05.06 | The Angels figured Albert Pujols would have the bat taken out of his hands this season by opponents looking to intentionally walk or pitch around the slugger, not by their own manager. But with the first baseman mired in the worst slump of what many consider a Hall of Fame career, Mike Scioscia benched Pujols on Saturday night against the Blue Jays, the first time in 28 games he didn't write Pujols' name into the third spot. Pujols, hitting .194 with no home runs and five runs batted in, did not participate in batting practice. In fact, Scioscia told him to not pick up a bat. Pujols spoke to reporters Friday night after he was booed in Angel Stadium following his last two at-bats in a 4-0 loss to Toronto, but he did not discuss Saturday's benching with beat reporters. "Go ask the manager," Pujols said. "I don't make the lineup."

They shouldn't have thrown in that Disneyland season pass. Those teacups will mess with your timing.

Stick a fork in him.

Stick a forck on pujols, perhaps with the pain from the forck, he may perform better, who knows??

May 6, 2012  11:14 AM ET

i had being saying this for a very long time,, seat him, give him a week or two off, this guy its over doing the swing the perssistant agressivenes hasn't helping him at all, best thing its,, seat him, bench him, he needs to star the game with a fresh mind!!!!

May 6, 2012  11:16 AM ET

should pujols take another day off??? if you can't help the team,,, then askl the manager to bench you,,, could a extra rest would help pujols to relax and quit chasing balls all over the plate?? should the halos leave pujols out of the lineup for awhile??

if the angels need to bench pujols in order to win games,,, then the most do what its needed!~!!!!

May 6, 2012  11:21 AM ET

as a player, they should know when its time to stop being soo stubborn, better being humble at all times,,, remember, if you can't help your own cause then take a step or two back and start again, it doesn't do any good if the owner its paying alots of money to hurt his own team!!

May 6, 2012  11:25 AM ET

Albert will be okay. Scioscia gave him a day off, nothing more.

he has say that every time that, the media and the fans ask him the same type of a question,,,
when are you going to perform at your level??? or when are you going to wake up????
answers,, soon, be patient, don't rush me ,relax, quit pushing me, can't concentrate myself with all of you asking me, the same thing over and over, well, things can get hected if pujols continue the nerveious wreck in the third hole in the lineup!!!

May 6, 2012  11:27 AM ET

it seems as if the third hole in the lineup, has being cursed, hunter went 0 for 4 in pujols spot, should pujold be moved to the 9 spot?? should that spot help pujols?? after all that would give pujols time to think in his happy times back in his prime time!!!

This is so cool SI's poster boy hit's the beach.

May 6, 2012  11:45 AM ET

the manager, has to do wehatever its needed, if benching pujols its the key to win games,,,,,, then bench him,,,, can't said that the organization didn't have confidence in his bat!!!

May 6, 2012  11:50 AM ET

the team needs to built confidence in the whole roster, the pitchers are doing their job except from the bullpen, the rotation has being great, but can't win games with the wrecked lineup, a lineup who hits three hits most of the games, score the amount of 3 runs or less, the closer can't hold the lead, and can't preserve the victory for the starters, all because the halos lineup has the ugliest inconssistant at the home plate!!!

May 6, 2012  11:53 AM ET

weaver has being too good of a starter, haren has pitch to the team's expectations, santana has proved that he can keep the game close for the halos hitters to win the games, except that the angels hitters have being too soft of a hitters!!!

May 6, 2012  11:55 AM ET

should the angels take a drastic approach towards the halos trouble in the hitting depth?? or should the franchise cut the players salary in half??

They shouldn't have thrown in that Disneyland season pass. Those teacups will mess with your timing.

i think pujols has being too passive with himself, heck he got the top high contract,, and without any type of clause added to that contract of his,,, pujols can do whatever he feels pleased!!!

May 6, 2012  12:00 PM ET

but just don't forget, there are times to think, there are times to relax, and there its always a way that the team can get tired of waiting in his albastros as a power hitter!!!
