08:16 AM ET 05.07 | Cole Hamels is going old-school, even if it costs him a few bucks. After holding the Nationals to one run with eight strikeouts in eight innings of work on Sunday night, Hamels didn't beat around the bush when asked what he was trying to do with a first-inning pitch that hit 19-year-old super prospect Bryce Harper in the back. "I was trying to hit him," Hamels said. "I mean, I'm not going to deny it. It's something that I grew up watching. I'm just trying to continue old baseball, because I think some people get away from it. I remember when I was a rookie, the strike zone was really, really small and you didn't say anything, because that's the way baseball is." ... "It's just welcome to the big leagues," said Hamels.

No one ever accused Hamels of being a genius.

Gotta love the "tough guy" routine and how he was bringing it back, OLD SKOOL. What a tool.

It probably would have came off better if Hamels said he was just trying to back the kid off the plate.

Bud will probably suspend Hamels for "incessant honesty".

What has Harper done to Hamels?

May 7, 2012  09:00 AM ET

Heck, Gibson would have just given him 'the glare' and Harper would have been backing out of the box. But Gibson also would never felt the need to publicly explain what he did, it would just have been understood.

Insanity!!!! A young, brash, immensely talented teenager breaks into the bigs and the "vets" are angry about it? Doesn't make much sense.

Probably...but I'm glad he said it. Gibson would have said the same thing. we need more old school guys around.

Doubtful, back in those days players often did stuff like that but didn't talk about it. The actions spoke for them.
