08:00 AM ET 05.08 | Among the names best-suited to his craft in NFL history, Ryan Longwell is now looking for work. [Longwell had hit] 135 of 157 field goal attempts in the regular season during that span for the Vikings and going 2-for-2 in the 2009 playoffs. The first thought was that [draftee Blair Walsh] was being brought in to heighten the placekicking competition. But it appears after three days of rookie mini-camp over the weekend, the Vikings are ready to hand Walsh the job outright. Today, the team released Longwell and sent him on his way. ... [The] stage is fully cleared for Walsh to win placekicking duties for the team even after a senior season at Georgia during which he missed 14 of 35 field goal attempts.

The more I read about the Vikings and their decisions, how can anything be perceived but Wilf and management throwing the season and lining up an LA deal?

He'll fit in just fine with this team.

You know, I feel for guys like Allen who give it everything on every play just to be worn down by garbage like this.

Allen, Peterson and some of the young players have to be hoping for their contracts to run out. Too bad AP signed a long term deal last year.

The Minnesota state senate votes today on a new stadium deal. If the vote fails to pass, the Vikes could very well be one step closer to being out the door.

Another brilliant move by the best front office in the NFL.

When Brad Childress was the coach, he seemed to be put front and center to take the heat for questionable personnel decisions that were made above his head. Now that he's been gone, the ineptitude of the front office really shines through.

Yup, two different coaches and still more head scratching decisions. The level of ineptitude must go pretty high. I'll give them one thing though I really liked their draft this year.... Kalil, Smith, Blanton (Yeah I'm a Notre Dame fan), Robinson and the 2 receivers from Arkansas, pretty nice.

I guess with Millen gone from Detroit, Minnesota decided to step up as the biggest front office losers. There's plenty of teams that make poor decisions but the Vikings manage to make it an art form; no stumbling through the process, they've got it down.

You'd hope that as the team deteriorates, some teams would come trying to make an offer. I'm not a baseball fan but at least those teams know how to tear apart a team just before the trade deadline.

He's cheaper...

That's the problem with the NFL the trade deadline is way too early. Imagine if it was week 12 or something and teams on the cusp of the playoffs may make some wild trades.

This guy will be just fine. There's no wind in the dome so he will only miss kicks at away games outside is all. No problemo.

Especially now that they're operating with the backloaded schedules for divisional play.

That, too.

And no one's picking the Vikes to get anywhere near the Super Bowl. The GM must have figured out there's going to be that one clutch that gets them to the Promised Land.

Yes. A year ago they gave him a 4 year $12 million contract. He would cost almost $4 million this year.
He turns 38 this year, he shanked 6 of his 28 FG attempts, and had too many of his kickoffs returned last year.
I don't blame them one bit. If they have found their new kicker for a few years, then why not?

Your logic is flawed IMO. That's half the games assuming they're all outside. Minnesota's "dome" hasn't been the most reliable recently; hope that patch holds. Home teams should statistically win the majority of their games. I think a kicker can be the tipping point for away games; that's where they earn their money.
