NFL defines no-fly zone for Luck

08:02 AM ET 05.08 | If Andrew Luck wants to work out with his new Colts teammates, he'll have to make his own travel arrangements. Despite an offer by owner Jim Irsay to make his private jet available to Luck, that is prohibited by the NFL's collective bargaining agreement. ESPN first reported the restriction. Shortly after the Colts used the first overall pick in the April 26 draft on the former Stanford quarterback, Irsay mentioned he would be "creative" in helping Luck get together with his teammates. "I would help facilitate that if need be with planes or helicopters or what have you to get these guys together," Irsay said. "We do what we can do within the rules ..." The rules leave it up to Luck to get to wherever he has to go.

This piece doesn't tell the story. I heard a bit of this from ESPN and I guess Luck is still under some college (possibly NCAA) constraints that while he's still a student, he's not allowed any of these perks.
That's my understanding. If anyone has more information or a better grasp of it, I'd like to hear it. It'd add more than what the Indianapolis Star provided.

If the school year is not over I would presume you are still considered a student and subject to the NCAA rules.

That's what I thought. Just haven't heard the issue raised before. I guess most guys just call it a day at school once they're drafted and then work courses off season. (Roethlesberger (sp?) just graduated over the weekend).

That's dumb. What is the NCAA gonna do suspend him? Take away eligibility? Not saying your comment is dumb by the way, just the NCAA.

I agree. And it isn't as though they can make anymore money off him. That's more of the "student athlete" losing out to the business of college sports.

I don't get it though. He's not technically a student athlete anymore he is a professional. So the only rules that should apply are just those that apply to any student. I mean any other kid gets offered by a company they are going to work for once they graduate a flight to the companies office, would any college care? Is their anything they could or would do?

The NCAA could respond with some form of sanction against Stanford's football program, which would also be pretty dumb.

I read it as being part of the CBA that he had to finish his school year before joining the Colts, but I could be mistaken

The article seems to indict the NFL collective bargaining agreement, not the NCAA, for the travel arrangement restrictions Luck could be facing.
