'Overhyped' Phoenix update merely unsatisfying

08:28 AM ET 05.08 | As of Tuesday morning, the Coyotes were still wards of the NHL, and that's unlikely to change in the immediate future. [Though] former San Jose Sharks CEO Greg Jamison and his unnamed investors appear earnest about buying the team -- and Bettman appears bullish on their chances -- many of the old intractable issues are still hanging over the transaction. "You may choose to be cynical on the point, so you'll just have to wait and see like everybody else how successful we are," Bettman said. The NHL commissioner opened the news conference by calling the gathering overhyped, and as it turned out, even renaming the hoped-for announcement an "update" may have overshot the mark.

What if the unthinkable happened and Phoenix won the Cup? Would the league still move them?

I suppose if they have no choice they'd have to. This group still has to deal with Glendale, the Goldwater Institute, the twenty hockey fans in Phoenix...

I thought the guy that wants to buy them is staying?

If the sale goes through and the above organizations are properly negotiated with. This is still a team that will be losing money, even if they won the damn Cup. That isn't going to change for a long time. Something has to give, no?

Studies show the fan base will increase by 20% in Phoenix if they win the cup.

Ummmm. Excuse us, Mr. Betman. But, we already know how successful you've been so far. Why should we expect any different fthis time?

Just like it has in Anaheim? Or Carolina? Dallas was a gold mine a decade ago! Tampa fills the arena all the time, as long as tickets are under $10.

None of these teams have any residual popularity from their Cup-winning days. TV ratings locally are almost uniformly abysmal in Southern markets. Basically, the only fans they have are the ones that show up to the arenas in those $30 "family pack" deals. You can't run a successful franchise against teams that are pulling in nine figure revenues annually when breaking even would be considered a milestone.

I think there is an issue of Glendale continuing to provide many millions of $$ to the team for operating costs related to the arena. What kind of return are the people of Glendale getting for having tax money spent in such a way?

And, the corollary question, if the Coyotes win the Cup and move, where will the parade be? :)

lol....if they needed a study for that then they're in the wrong marketplace.

I could only imagine the Habs winning the cup...already incredibly overpriced & difficult to obtain tickets would become....more incredibly overpriced and rarer than kryptonite. Ditto for most other Noreastern frachises...
