Philadelphia desperate for bullpen arms

08:16 AM ET 05.10 | When Wednesday night's game ended, a two-run lead had become a 10-6 Phillies loss and more grist for a legion of bullpen critics. [Optioning Joe Savery] opens a spot on the active roster, which a team spokesman said would be filled after Thursday's off day. The logical choice is Triple A prospect Jake Diekman, a 25-year-old lefty who impressed [Rich Dubee] so much during spring training that the pitching coach jokingly offered to become his agent. ... [The] Phillies cannot afford to keep direct mailing victories to opponents. They have to hit, yes, and they have to catch. But a team built on pitching needs to hang onto the leads that it is given. And right now, that means an active search for a pitcher who can do so.

Besides Philly's top three (Halladay,Lee and Hamels)...they're not a very good baseball team...Mets lit up that bullpen....11 come from behind victories....in "The Season of No Expectations"..the New York Mets appear to be a fiesty, scrappy, never say die team.....

Everyone dogged Omar Minaya...but I guess he didn't do that bad a job ...all these young guys are his players....

I guess the shoe is on the other flipper now isnt it? This bullpen makes the 2007 Mets bullpen look elite. When a team of AAA players smack around the home teams' pitching 3 straight games, its time to pack it up. Unless Ryan Howard and Chase Utley can pitch, its over.

dang, it's only May. A bit early to be hitting the panic button, isn't it? And besides, there are plenty of relievers going to be available soon as the A's, Pirates, Royals and other small market teams start their annual fire sale.

and what exactly do you suppose they trade to get one of the relievers. The same relievers the real contenders will be trying to land? Next time, read what you wrote, take a deep breath, reconsider what you wrote... use the restroom, confirm what you wrote, then hit delete.

remember, this is the Pirates we're talking about. They got basically nothing for Jason Bay and for Joey Bautista.....it wouldn't take much. A warm six-pack and maybe some leftover party beads from Philly's last World Series win would swing the deal.

and i'm a lifetime Pirates fan, btw. Pity poor me!

sure do, although i've never been there. Funny how they can only fill it on bobblehead days, though. What that says about my former hometowners, I don't want to know.

....desperate for some hitting as well.

QUOTE(#10):

Yes it is a reversal of roles and our BULLPEN is quite lousy, I will also agree that the Mets are a AAA team, but I will also throw in that MOST teams without their #3 & #4 hitters would be pretty decimated too....................if and I say "IF" the Phillies can play .500 ball until Howard comes back they should be in the running for a playoff spot. Division winner? I don't see that in the cards but I think they will be in contention until the end ....

I dont want to hear IF's since I didnt hear them from any Phillies fans when Delgado, Wright, Beltran, Reyes were all hurt. Are you paying attention??? NO EXCUSES. When the Mets had their injuries, the chirping was "oh they're old" or "they have no minor league talent". **** up, and deal with it.

bullpens generally take care of themselves, it takes a little time to see what you actually have.
