Despite signs of life, future bleak for Sixers

08:09 AM ET 05.10 | In the early going this season, when Doug Collins' Sixers were jumping out to a hot start, many were quick to point out how often they were facing a depleted lineup. "Fool's gold," Collins said. "Our 20-9 start was a little bit of fool's gold." ... It will be tempting for management to look at a season in which the Sixers finished over .500 for the first time in seven years and won a playoff round for the first time in nine years and then believe everything is on track for the future. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Sixers are still mired in the same no-man's land where they have resided since Allen Iverson finally did play that last game he was always talking about and since the organization put itself in salary cap jail.

Details, details, Ziggy! They're interns... most of them wouldn't know a real NBA player if they got dunked on by one.

The sportswriters in Philly are even harder to please than the notorious fans.

They still haven't finished the Bulls, why are they so certain they have won the series. Will they win? Probably. Should they be counting on it already? Only if they want to ensure minimum effort and another loss.

As much as people complain about All-NBA defender Iguodala, Elton "John" Brand had 5 points and eats up more salary cap space than Iggy. But its more fun to bash one of the NBA's best perimeter defenders because uneducated fans only know what points are.

Brand is also paid like a #1. Brand makes more than Iguodala and produces less. Fans should be screaming for HIS head. If you wanna bash Iggy, fine... but make sure Brand is bashed first. Thats all I ask.

When Brand leaves, an average power forward will replace him and exceed what he brings for less money. When Iggy leaves... perimter players will be droppin 35-40 points on the Sixers regularly.

So it says they won a playoff series? they're winning a playoff series, havent won yet. i'm sure the actual article (i'm not gonna read it) makes clear this is an if they win scenario the FO will be looking at. Interns you should prolly throw that in there next time

Iggy is a solid player- but not a #1 and he's paid like one-that's why he gets hammered all the timeProblem for the sixers, is that their young guys are not in their 'prime', elton is past it and iggy is just not that type of player to carry a team and be a go to scorer teams that win rings have

Jgb,

Iggy is good but he isn't grossly overpaid compared to those on his level. According to hoopshype he is making 13.5Mil this year and 14.7Mil next year. Compare him to say a Deng making 12.3Mil this year and 13.2Mil next year and it is not that bad. I do agree that the Sixers paid him hoping he would be the go number 1 option but he is Scottie Pippen "lite" lacking a consistent jumper. I would say he is probably top 4 defensive SF in the league and the second best passer at the SF position behind Lebron

Elton Brand is way overpaid but after next year his contract is over. He is making 17 mil this year and 18 next. Sixers have to sign Hawes who will probably make 12-14 per due to the going rate of NBA centers. So this article is partly correct Sixers can't probably make a signifcant play in the free agent pool until Brand's contract expires or is traded. We are still capable of making the playoffs so I am not concerned really.

I've heard Sixers have long been interested in Amare. If they call again for a swap of Amare and Brand Knicks will be dumb not to listen...

Lostwill,

We don't want Amare now haha! I am not sure what Amare has left in the tank and he is not a gamble the Sixers need to be taking right now. Would Amare place the Sixers above the Heat? Nope probably not even better than the Pacers. I don't think the Knicks would take an overpaid Brand just to give Melo more room to operate. Amare is on the books until 2014/2015 so Sixers will be stuck paying Amare 20+Mil/yr not happening. We want exactly what yall want cap flexibility so we can possibly sign some good free agents. The East besides Miami is up for grabs next year in my opinion.

Amare's defied all the soothsayers.... he may be your Mr. Santa!

Amare, Boozer, Rashard Lewis, and Brand, are all on the do not buy/damage goods list for obvious reasons. These guys can only be moved for one another, desperation or stupid managment at this point.
