08:14 AM ET 05.10 | There's a new gunslinger in town. Averaging a cool 99.1 mph with his fastball, Royals reliever Kelvin Herrera has taken over as the league's hardest thrower since being called up last month. Here's the top 10, according to Fangraphs data: 99.1 -- Herrera ... 98.6 -- Andrew Cashner (Padres) ... 98.4 -- Henry Rodriguez (Nationals) ... 96.8 -- Nate Jones (White Sox) ... 96.8 -- Alexi Ogando (Rangers) ... 96.7 -- Pedro Strop (Orioles) ... 96.4 -- Aroldis Chapman (Reds) ... 96.3 -- Jason Motte (Cardinals) ... 96.0 -- Esmil Rogers (Rockies) ... 96.0 -- Craig Kimbrel (Braves). The top starter on the list is Stephen Strasburg at 95.7. Obviously, Strasburg and a few other starters could average in the high-90s for an inning like some of these relievers, but they have to pace themselves.

Woo woo!!! The Royals lead something....ANYTHING. Yes, it's been a while since 85'!!!

Awaiting TommyJohn...

May 10, 2012  01:09 PM ET

Like every other Royals prospect he'll star with a Big market team in a few years

Aroldis Chapman is not in first? Must be because the others above him have an even worst change up and throw it less.

May 10, 2012  01:13 PM ET

Doh! average speed of fastball. Ok reading fail. Still I have a hard time believing any of the dudes above Aroldis Chapman can throw harder.

May 10, 2012  02:08 PM ET

The answer is an unequivocal yes. He's very good. Watched him pitch Tuesday.

Switch a guy over to a starter role and his average fastball speed drops. It must be that way... they need to pace themselves. Only freaks like Verlander can pop a **** on the 100th pitch.

ABSOLUTELY! Where's williejuan today? Could he have finally ran outta "stick a forks" yesterday and is out silverware shopping?

May 10, 2012  08:14 PM ET

Although 16 inning's pitched is a small sample size, Herrera has shown excellent control so far.

May 11, 2012  10:29 AM ET

so i guess chapmans 105 mph fasrball doesnt mean anything right ?

May 11, 2012  12:14 PM ET

Most of the pitchers on that list will require Tommy John sooner or later.

if strasburg would have went the distance last nite against the pirates, he would have struck out 20.
