College football's best conference

The other big winner in Monday night's national title game was the SEC, which reaffirmed its status as the best league in college football. LSU's comfortable 38-24 victory over Ohio State in the Bowl Championship Series title game came a year after Florida's 41-14 dismantling of the Buckeyes in the title game. Those runaway victories have helped create the perception that the SEC is distancing itself from other conferences.

Again, must be a slow news day ...

January 9, 2008  07:00 AM ET

is distancing? Wow....SI is amazing...reporting something that every rational football fan across the nation has known for several years....did they just have what alcoholics refer to as "a moment of clarity?"

January 9, 2008  07:05 AM ET

Yeah, Florida helped distance the SEC after getting smoked by Michigan. That's right, smoked. If Hart doesn't fumble 2x inside the 5, the Gators were toast. It's all about the "speed" of the SEC right?? Manningham and Arrington flew past the "speed" of the Gators the entire game. What about the speed of Wells blowing past the LSU defenders? Speed is great, but doesn't mean squat if you don't execute.

January 9, 2008  07:18 AM ET

Not everyone in the Big 10 gets smoked in all of their bowl games!!

January 9, 2008  07:24 AM ET

Sort of like Illinois..they looked really good

January 9, 2008  07:45 AM ET

Lets start playing bowl games in the north so SEC & PAC10 don't have home games for the NC.

January 9, 2008  07:59 AM ET

That being said...I think the SEC conference is awesome right now.

January 9, 2008  08:00 AM ET

Illinois won 2 games last year, they are on the up.

January 9, 2008  08:13 AM ET

No, let's not play games in the north. If you can play, you can play. This year's game was in a dome. The tickets were split 50/50. It wouldn't have mattered where the game was played. They could have played in my backyard and they still would have lost. The SEC is the best conference, and has been for years.

January 9, 2008  08:13 AM ET

Nothing in the world like SEC football. Watch out for the Gators, Dawgs and Tigers again next year!

January 9, 2008  08:16 AM ET

By the way for those screaming for a NC game "up north", the Big 10 has stated on numerous occassions that they do not want thier teams playing regular season games after Thanksgiving. So, do you really play in snow? Looks like NOT!

January 9, 2008  08:19 AM ET

Then of course there would be the sponsorship thing. Get someone to sponsor a wek long event with primarily outdoor actiivties, leading to a bowl in the conditions you try to lead people to believe the teams "up north" play in every week. Good luck with that!

January 9, 2008  08:28 AM ET

JJ, how big is your backyard?

January 9, 2008  08:41 AM ET

I've had some pretty good flag football games back there. It's enough space for LSU/SEC to run all over Ohio State year after year...

January 9, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Fear the Blue,
I thought a 'healthy' Michigan team was going to take it all this year! A bunch of fifth year seniors from Ann Arbor barely hung with a bunch of freshmen and sophmores from Gainesville, remember that a TD would have won the game for UF! If that was the Big 10's preseason NC favorite, yiu guys have a long way to go.

The Big 10 is a joke, it took Henne, Hart, Manningham, Long, etc.. to play the best game they've played in 4 years to beat an inexperienced and 4 loss Gator team. I guess after that game the seniors on the Michigan squad can finally declare a major?

January 9, 2008  08:59 AM ET

It's the SEC and I'm a Michigan fan and I disagree with the Wolverines smoking them. 41-35 isn't a smoking.

January 9, 2008  09:04 AM ET

It occurs to me that most of the aforementioned comments are pretty much "right on." I think most folks have noticed that depending on the geographical location of college teams and their conferences, each plays a similar style of ball in a speciific conference. In winning or loosing games, it just goes to show how well a team has adapted to their style of play and really how good a player they have in each position. LSU clearly was the number 1 team this year and say what you will about Les Miles, he got the job done as a Coach should. I think it would be great though watching LSU play USC which plays a different style of football because each of those teams and their coaches are capable of bringing out the best in each player.

See-dub:

Fla and St Urban got BEAT. That's all that matters. Historically speaking, Michigan has always done well against the SEC. Is the SEC the best football conference right now? Yes. Just like I think the ACC is best in basketball. But that will change.

January 9, 2008  09:18 AM ET

No doubt the SEC is a good conference; but the last two games against Ohio State, just porves that it is "distancing itself" from the Big 10, which got smoked in every bowl game they played. Oh, wait a minute, Michigan took a chomp out of Florida...sorry about the misrepresentation.

January 9, 2008  09:20 AM ET

Wow, I can't believe SI would pull this story from NY and deliberately enourage an antagonistic thread. This is going to get real ugly real fast.

(And did I mention that the Big 12 is the only conference with four teams in the top 10?)
