With Justin Williams likely out for the rest of the regular season and with Matt Cullen slowly recovering from a concussion, the Hurricanes are in talks to add an NHL forward to fill out their top nine. But the Canes continue to pursue potential deals for an offensive-minded defenseman, even if the price now is far too high.

Damn right they need an offensive defenseman. They need to do something quick.

picking up Samsonov was dumb, and may have been the biggest favour anyone has done the Blackhawks since the Wings traded Ted Lindsay there for trying to organize a union...he will washout of Carolina with no more than a handful of games played, and now their cap has to eat the huge salary that Chicago had signed him to. Good luck, Carolina, you wasted a move on that lazy idiot

Tomas Kaberle anyone? The Leafs should be teasing Carolina all the way to the deadline to drive up his price, which could land the Leafs the top two prospects in their system plus maybe a high -end pick. The price for a mobile, puck-moving defenceman is at a premium in the "new" NHL. Kaberle is among the league's best at moving the puck out of his own end, joining the rush and a very smart powerplay specialist. Any team needing these assets would pay a high price for him, especially since he is in his prime, and is reasonably paid at 4 million/season.

goCanada, the 'Canes are on the hook for $881k. That's not that bad. He was worth the gamble. Carolina was hurting bad for a forward and he played well last night. I don't think he will be the savior but it's better than what they had and at not a horrible price. Now they need to shore up their defense.

881 g's for Samsanov is still too much. The only reason he produced in Boston was because he played along side Joe and Glenn Murray. Look at what he's done for the Habs and the Hawks...JACK SQUAT.

Samsonov played all right with the Canes last night.I think he just needs proper linemates and top 6 minutes. He will always be a player that relies on his linemates, but i think theres still hope for the little plug.

either that or he'll pout his way out of Hurricane country . . . . . . . but yeah . . . .I can see that time is needed for him to produce . . .any numbers . . . . . .oh ! . . . and for the trainers to put a horse shoe in his equiptment bag would'nt hurt either .

Maybe Kabbie will wave his no trade clause to play with his brother

January 9, 2008  10:31 PM ET

That Kaberle theory is an interesting one. He's cheaper (and infinitly better) than Bryn McCabe. All of this Leaf trade talk is starting to sound like there's going to be a fire sale in the Big Smoke. It's enough to make a Hab fan giddy.

With seven players out the line-up it is very hard to say what the canes need... We are one player or two from being renamed the Albany river canes
