Johnston hopes concussion suits aren't just for money

09:33 AM ET 05.13 | FRISCO -- Former Cowboys fullback Daryl "Moose" Johnston is not one of the growing number of former NFL players to file a lawsuit against the league over its handling of concussions. Johnston has chosen a different path to raise awareness about arguably the biggest problem in the NFL today. Speaking before Emmitt Smith's celebrity dinner Friday night, which honored the Cowboys' 1992 Super Bowl team, Johnston discussed the importance of being proactive and seeking medical examination to monitor retired players. Taking the problem to the court room was not one of his suggestions. "I think we all knew the dangers when we decided to play this game," said Johnston, a FOX Sports NFL analyst. "I don't think the NFL ever hid anything from anybody." While Johnston said that he understands "that there are some guys that are in tough shape right now," his hope is that the lawsuits aren't just about getting paid. "I don't want that to be lost through the course of this lawsuit because these are class action lawsuits based by the guys that did asbestos, based by the guys that did tobacco," Johnston said. "They're going to get a lot of money if they win these lawsuits. They have other reasons to be in this. I hope some of them have genuine concern for the players that they're representing."

I saw Johnston lay out linebackers in training camp. That dude could deliver the hit, catch the ball, whatever the coach asked him to do. It's amazing he survived.

Anyone notice where he was speaking? Emmitt Smith Celebrity Banquet to celebrate the 92 Championship Cowboys. "Hey guys, we're here tonight to talk about what it was like to have a team that was able to win in the post-season." "Terrell, can you refill my wine glass. Thanks, put that toward baby momma number 2."

Has anyone ever taken a look at the way players wear their helmets? Maybe it sounds stupid, but NFL and college players flip their helmets on and off like it's nothing. When I was younger and played, these things fit so dang tight on my head, it wasn't funny. Does that have anything to do with it? Maybe having that helmet on their so loosely allows the head to bonk a few times inside the helmet after the initial hit has been made.

NFL Players hope Johnston isn't just saying stuff for the money and keeping his job that is controlled not only by the media outlets but with approval of the NFL.
$9+ billion a year industry and rising? Maybe they should sit down and get serious with ex players BEFORE a court tells them what they should do?

I've heard Ditka talk about this. Helmets aren't supposed to come off as easily as they do. These guys whine about them being uncomfortable. What a crock! The equipment is better than ever; it's the players that are of lesser quality.

I am talking about ex players with some serious health issues who CANNOT get insurance at any price or a price they can afford.

50, you got it. I like Moose and think he's HoF caliber as a FB and even more has always represented himself as a classy guy but when these guys get the money they do from the NFL, you always have to be wary of the ulterior motive.

This is a civil law suit seeking monetary damages. Of course this is about the money. Pretty dense statement if you ask me.

It doesn't sound stupid at all. I think there's a lot of validity to that argument.
