10:22 AM ET 05.13 | In an effort to take the next step in 2012, 49ers quarterback Alex Smith has teamed with Tom House, baseball's version of the 49ers' head coach. A former major-league pitcher with a doctorate in sports psychology, House, 65, is best known as a professorial pitching coach who has counseled legends such as Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson. His expertise on the science of throwing led him to start working with NFL quarterbacks about a decade ago, and his pupils have included New England's Tom Brady and New Orleans' Drew Brees. On the recommendation of Brees, Smith spent a week with House in late March at the Rod Dedeaux Research and Baseball Institute at USC along with Brady, Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer and the Chiefs' Matt Cassel.

Can't hurt him. And, if he wants to be considered a legitimate QB rather than a system QB or game manager, he needs to take steps to improve his game.

New receivers, now a QB guru? This whole thing reeks of desperation.
Harbaugh is going to have to resign himself to the fact that Smith will NEVER become a first rate QB.

Brady, Brees and Palmer have worked with House. Two SB winners and a Heisman winner. But it is only news when Alex Smith works with him.

They also haven't had 7 different offensive coordinators in 7 years either.
I'm still not sold on Alex Smith as a long term solution but I'd at least like to give him the benefit of more than one year in the same system before writing him off completely.

I think he'll improve as long as Harbaugh is mentoring him.
If not, Aaron Rodgers will just continue to laugh at the 9ers for passing on him.

I suppose, but we do know he was Harbaugh's last choice to be the QB.

I think any coach has to look at what is available unless they have a top tier QB. And if the Colts didn't make that clear to everyone in the league this past season, you have to continually look for strong developmental opportunities. Right now, he's all SF has to work with and he found out that nobody else had an interest, so they have to rely on each other to take each other as far as they can.
