FSU still open to Big 12, SEC overtures

08:22 AM ET 05.14 | A day after making a splash for the program, Andy Haggard, the chair of FSU's Board of Trustees, didn't seem interested in making another in advance of the ACC's spring meetings. Haggard said he would back down from some of his comments "if I spoke on poor information." But he added that he remains concerned that the ACC isn't bringing in enough revenue to compete with rivals in the Southeastern Conference, Big 12 and other leagues. "All I tried to say was I think Florida State needs to keep an open mind," Haggard said Sunday morning. "If the Big 12 or the SEC or any other conference wants to talk, we have an obligation to listen. If the Big 12 calls, should we hang up the phone? No. I'm not saying take it. I'm saying listen to it."

I definitely agree. Listen to any options. Either the ACC or the Big 12 would probably be better options at this point than the ACC and its ridiculously low contract.

That reported $17 million per team for 15 years? It is backloaded. No significant increases from the current (and even more pathetic) contract will be seen for nine years. Swofford and company have done nothing to leverage the ACC's strengths and given away virtually everything for much, much less than any other major conference. Seems like it is time to go.

This situation will certainly prove interesting as it unfolds.

All of us who were against taking FSU into the SEC may end up with egg on our faces, or at least having to deal with B12 teams getting a toe-hold (or more) into FLA recruiting. We'll see how it turns out.

Os, could this possibly be the beginning of an ACC conference implosion a la the WAC?

Maybe. If FSU goes then I have heard that both Clemson and Miami would be interested in following. Others might look elsewhere too. Suddenly maybe VT and/or NCSt might start listening to the SEC. Maryland covets a Big Ten invite and I have heard GT would be interested in one as well. Etc. Any school with a desire to play football would realize that they could not compete on a national level if regional rivals are making $10M more per year in TV money. Any time you found a good coach, another area school would come and offer him double the money.

I think the ACC as a conference will survive either way. But it might become more of a Big East basketball league than a BCS football one, if FSU and a few others end up leaving.

FSU would be a great get for the Big 12...open up Fla recruiting kinda like the SEC is hoping to do with TAMU.

Hell, let's just get to the 16-team mega conferences and get this over with. $$ has ruined CFB...IMO it's gonna happen, and this slow process is more painful than just ripping the band-aide off.

College sports aren't ever going back where they were

It would seem that any advantage the SEC gained over the Big 12 by entering the Texas market (in markets, recruiting) would be eliminated should FSU join the B12. But it is not too late for the SEC to invite FSU. Our fan base seems mixed. Some would love it, some would hate it. But in the end I think it would be such a great fit that FSU would do it. As I have said before there are just so many great story lines should that happen. There would be an early ratings bonanza, and long lasting rivalries would develop overnight.

I dount that will happen.. Just as same w/ the SEC recruiting TX unless you LUS Arky and Bama...WVU will continue to do well in FL with the right coach.....$$$$ and academics..As long as the Big 3 stay strong, top kids will stay in state

Yeah, I just don't buy the recruiting angle opening up to other states far away. Fringe states maybe.

So far, and I know its early, but 2013 hasn't impacted any major recruits in Texas going SEC.

Wait a minute, I remember several FSU fans saying that you chose the ACC over the SEC in the 1990s to help promote your basketball team. Now, you want to leave?
