08:43 AM ET 05.16 | The theater of the bizarre in Washington has a new act, thanks to Stephen Strasburg's application of a topical hot balm. After the game, Manager Davey Johnson listed Strasburg's hardships, including a brief rain delay with two outs, a full count and the bases loaded in the first that was followed by a two-run single on his first pitch after the rain. Then Johnson volunteered another factor at his news conference. "The Hot Stuff on Stras," Johnson said. "I don't know how it got where it got, but it wasn't comfortable. ... Somehow it got the wrong place." When asked for additional details, pitching coach Steve McCatty said, "I'm not gonna touch that."

I thought the Nats were World Series bound. FP Santangelo seems to think every night a "historic" pitching performance is wasted because of the offense.

The whole team is overblown hype. They have a very good rotation. Their bullpen is hurting and their offense is mediocre.

I wouldn't touch it either... especially if it was there...

Been there, done that. When it happens, it isn't a laughing matter. At least not for the party involved...

"I'm not gonna touch that,"....OK, that is the coach speak of the year. give him the award now.

Yowza!!!

If he followed Shaq's advice and used an icy hot pain patch instead of the cream, he wouldn't have had hot nuts after the game.

You have proven yourself to me to be probably the only objective Phillies fan I've ever encountered on this site, possibly on Earth.

That said, would you agree that in addition to the Nationals, your description fits the Phillies pretty well too?

SportsGrid.com offers up this headline:

When The Nationals??? Manager Talks About Stephen Strasburg Getting Icy Hot On His Balls, Things Get Weird

This is funny stuff.

Classic prank but this time he apparently did it to himself.

Have seen that done in camp, twice...funny so long as you are not on the receiving end.

Amen to that!

Overblown hype. I haven't see it. Most pre season predictions that I read had the Nats either missing out of the playoffs or nabbing the last wild card. They've had as many injuries to their 25 man roster as any team in baseball. But they have somehow kept ahead of teams that got more hype like the Marlins and, yes, the Phillies.

SHould we read anything from the fact that the coach said "I'm going to touch that" instead "I'm not going to touch them"?

May 16, 2012  12:47 PM ET

Everyone here missed the classic Seinfeld show with Kramer...."The Balm? Who told you to put the balm on??!"

I pulled this prank on an cocky underclassman on our high school swim team. Icy-Hot in the Speedo. Let's also say that if you ever fall victim to this prank, do NOT try washing off with water. The kid jumped into the pool, and that just aggravated it ten-fold. Probably the best prank I've ever pulled.

This is an old hazing ritual hockey players used to use. But it was never self-administered!
