08:11 AM ET 05.17 | Could 7-foot-2 Roy Hibbert be taking his talents to the red, white and blue? Ajani Williams, president of the Jamaica Basketball Association (JaBA), said [Hibbert] has asked the administration for a release in order to become eligible to play for the United States at this summer's Olympic Games. "He (Hibbert's agent) said they were grateful to us for having him playing with our team because he has a shot at playing with Team USA, and so they would like JaBA to release him from the national team," said Williams during an interview with The Gleaner [Wednesday]. However, there are some compliance issues that have to be worked out with USA Basketball and the world governing body FIBA.

You just don't get it, do you?

When will you come around to the fact.....the FACT.....that these players view the Olympics as a once in a lifetime opportunity?

That this is an opportunity that they CAN'T pass on.....and that no amount of coaxing or threats from their NBA teams is gonna persuade them into walking away from the opportunity to play in the Olympics?

And BTW.......you can always threaten to trade a player who goes to the Olympics......but that ain't gonna change what these do.....except to convince them to 'take their talents elsewhere'.....when they become free agents.

Maybe Indy management should beg him TO play. Because of the timing of the Olympics and when games are played, a lot of guys have come into the following season in peak shape/condition. Maybe playing would be good for Hibbert. It can't hurt to be around the best players and coaches the NBA/NCAA has to offer. Guys have had career years coming off of playing for the national team. D Wade and Lamar Odom come to mind.

Also, playing in the Olympics is a once in a lifetime kind of thing for most guys. I think he should do it, regardless of what Cuban thinks (not that I think Cuban is necessarily wrong; he is just looking out for what's best for his business).

Which is why, of course, that Hibbert wants to be released from his country's affiliation in order to play for good ol' U.S.A.

Real patriot there...

Real patriot there...

LOL......After Becky Hammon (S.A. Silver Stars) was voted All-WNBA 1st Team (2007), she was completely ignored when the selection for the USA Women's Olympic team was made......didn't even get invited to try-out.

What did she do? She accepted an invite from the Russion team to play for them in the Olympics......and she did it!

She was 31 years-old at the time and was NEVER gonna get another OPPORTUNITY to play in the Olympics. The U.S. Women's coach (Ann Donovan) called her a traitor for playing for the Russians (LOL)......but that was the same coach who didn't even invite her to tryout for the tear (SMH).

BTW.....she was able to play for the Russians because she had a Russian passport (played winter pro-ball in Russia) and having a Russian Passport = Russian Citizenship if you decide to accept it.

As for Hibbert......Jamaca ain't going to the Olypics.....the team didn't qualify. So......he's chasing that one in a lifetime opportunity to play in the Olympics. BTW.....Hibbert was born in NYC.....but his dad is Jamacan, which is why he could play for Jamaca.

See.....no issue of patriotism versus lack of patriotism with either of these ahtletes......it's all a matter of.....OPPORTUNITY.....and gettin' in where you can fit in ;-) .

J, I think what my man is trying to say is that these players want to play in the Olympics - not necessarily for any type of country. All they want is to play in the Olympics. The Olypics is hosted once every four years and it's a world stage so to be part of it means y're the best of your craft on a global level. Add the fact that Sports careers are short so players have a very small window to make it. Compared to the NBA where elite players can spend their whole career ring hunting, the Olympics window is very very short.

.......might want to take off those rose colored glasses/just sayin

No rose colored glasses here.....as a matter of fact, I see things for what they are to a higher extent than you do.

For whatever reason(s) the players opt for the opportunity to play in the Olympics, they couldn't give a dam what the owners think. "You wanna trade me.....go ahead"; that's their general attitude. And they know the owners can't really penalize them.

The only caveat is that a MIGHT get a contract voided if they get hurt. And the Players have already considered that 'possibility'. Really.....how many Olympic NBA players have NBA games due to injuries that occurred in the Olympics......or in international games, for that matter? Very.....VERY.....few.

And you think an owner is really gonna release an Olympic caliber player? REALLY? That's a laughable thought. Oh yeah.....Noviski hurts himself in the 2008 Olympics and Cuban voids his contract......what happens to the Mav's championship in 2011? It....wouldn't.....have.....happened!

And THAT'S why owners take no action against their ball-plyers who opt for the Olympics.....even players like Deng who is putting off treatment to play.....because the owners are smart enough to realize that taking such action would be BEYOND stupid.

But again.....you just don't get it. What does that say for you?

Exactly!

How many players have won NBA Championships in the last 24 years.....how many NBA rings?

Now......how many Olympic gold medals for men's basketball have been awarded in that period?

I think you'll find that roughly, 1/4 as many gold medals have been awarded versus NBA Championship rings......
