MLB's best pitcher stuck in the Reds bullpen

08:15 AM ET 05.17 | The Aroldis Chapman experiment continues with the Reds. What exactly is this team doing with a $30 million setup man? It's not that [Chapman] isn't worth the money. By this year's evidence -- no runs allowed in 19 1/3 innings, with 34 strikeouts and a .296 opponents OPS -- he may worth every penny. He may well be the best pitcher the Reds have. Or the best pitcher anyone has. So ... what's he doing pitching the eighth inning? ... Some Reds people note that [Dusty Baker] manager is on a one-year contract, and say they understand it. But it's not only Baker. [Walt Jocketty] doesn't rule out Chapman in the rotation at some point this year, but he also said, "We may become resigned to the fact that he may spend this year in the bullpen."

MLB's "best pitcher"?

Where have I heard this story before.

Oh yeah, see Chamberlain, Joba

May 17, 2012  08:50 AM ET

He won't be leaving the bullpen anytime soon with stats like those.

They are obviously terrified of giving this violent throwing man extended innings, and for good reason

He is facinating to watch...

QUOTE(#7):

He's one injury away from being a spot starter, if that happens AND he performs like he has in middle relief (damn, the guy's not even given enough props to be a closer), he will solidify himself in the rotation...........

In the recent past he has had serious control issues. By the looks of things, he has righted that ship.

Yeah, you're right a close to ZERO ERA coupled with nearly a 2:1 K/IP ratio.................why is this guy even on the team?<facepalms>

I don't want to speak for Bishop, but I think he was suggesting that because he's having such great success in the role he's in, they may/should elect to leave him there.

Or, he hasn't seen his numbers and typed that out as he was having a stroke.

I don't blame you. He has been pretty impressive so far. I've got him in two fantasy league -- one being a keeper league -- so I'm hoping you prove to be right.

Rangers are looking pretty damn solid this year. Of course, not against the Indians, but against pretty much every other team, they look lights out.

Best pitcher???? 7+ innings game after game is a much different test that pitching 1 inning or less.

This year he don't see how hard or fast he can throw the ball trying to hit that 100mph+ everytime, then after every pitch turning around and looking at the scoreboard to see how fast it was. This year he's throwing it mid 90's and not worring about the speed and it shows in his control, facing 70 batters and striking out 34 is pretty good.

He will be starting after the All-Star game.
