08:16 AM ET 05.17 | Adrian Gonzalez was none too pleased with Wednesday's home plate ump, Hunter Wendelstedt. Gonzalez was particularly upset over his final at-bat, in which Wendelstedt called a strike on a Joel Peralta fastball that proved to be well outside the strike zone. The Red Sox first baseman would ultimately swing and miss at the fifth pitch he saw from Peralta, a high-and-inside offering that proved to be just inside the zone. "It wasn't even close," Gonzalez said. ... [The first baseman was also asked if he was concerned about his lack of power.] Gonzalez said not to worry. "I'll start hitting home runs," he said. "I'll hit a home run [Thursday]."

At least he didn't say which Thursday.

For some reason he's not the same hitter that he was with San Diego.

In the actual quote, A-Gon said he'd hit one tomorrow (Thursday). It annoys me when writers replace spoken words with paraphrasing in those silly brackets.

He was until last year's home run derby.

That is what an air compressor is for.

You would be right about that.

I didn't see the call, but Hunter Wendelstedt is a dingle berry.

I was watching PitchZone on MLB.com. Assuming the technology doesn't lie, the ump had a few places in the game where he suddenly would be giving random calls. I do remember Gonzo's at-bat and that one particular call. It wasn't even close. The three balk calls were also questionable. Even the Rays' announcers were criticizing him on that.

I do hope these umps get their calls reviewed, and their salaries and opportunities adjusted accordingly. This guy looked like he just wanted to go home.

Adrian Gonzalez is from San Diego and he's about as far from hot headed as it gets.

Agreed. He's as mellow as they come. More often than not when critiquing, he's hard on himself and promises not to let a particular infraction happen again.

The characterization was... uninformed.
