Welker on contract talks: 'Actually gotten worse'

08:04 AM ET 05.18 | So much for Wes Welker's making progress toward signing a long-term deal after his $9.5 million franchise tender. If anything, it's just the opposite. "There have been talks, but nothing that's brightened anything at all," Welker said in an exclusive interview with the Herald yesterday. "It's actually gotten worse." By worse, Welker said the offer on the table is less than the two-year, $16 million fully guaranteed contract that was offered to him during the 2011 regular season. So why would he agree to the tender now? Welker said he signed the one-year tag because in the end, even though he may have been advised to stay away from camp, that's what he felt was best.

I'd be happy to see Welker out of NE. It's tough rooting for a player I respect when he's on a team I loathe.

Or, is this just more disinformation being spread by Darth Belichick?

Some how, I can't feel sorry for Multi Millionaires!!!

Since the Herald and the Pats don't really get along, I take this story as B.S.

May 18, 2012  08:23 AM ET

I don't think he'll be back next season if the Pats don't extend him this season.

I think NE is starting to see a bit too much wear on the tires with Welker. It looks like they only see 1 or maybe 2 years worth of value.

Are these guys math challenged. Ya can make more getting tagged twice. Jeesh. And tag money is ALL guaranteeeed! tag him twice and it will total $19.5 million and if still around he can be UFA.
The only money that matters is the guaranteed part.

He's a little guy who has taken a lot of hard hits which is probably why the Pats don't want to give him a contract with any length.

It's like they take the lack of a long term deal as a sign of disrespect by the organization.

Maybe they just need a hug.

Pats will take it one year at a time with Welker and Welker appears to understand it. You don't hear him whining about respect. He knows he has it on the field. And as for the $$$, a guaranteed contract is something most NFLers, even pro bowlers, don't have. So, he's doing just fine. He's earned every cent of the 9.5.

You are sooo right. But OMG, give me a break. Respect? They are paying him like he is the third best WR in the game. And after that deal in Detroit to the WR it will go up plenty next year too.

They won't tag him twice.

The he gets paid this year well and becomes UFA. Win/win for him.

May 18, 2012  09:04 AM ET

....how can you franchise him for $9.5 mil a year then offer him less...typical New England...the "HC of the NEP's" ..will just replace him with someone else......loyalty pppppfffftttt ....:p

Really. On the other hand, he may actually be the second-best wide receiver in the game, and the only one at that level who has proved it year after year since he joined the Patriots.

If they don't reach an agreement, he has a great one-year deal, and then they have to decide whether to tag him again for a lot more money, or let him go. The only way they can offer less than $10 million a year is to guarantee a third or even a fourth year on the contract.

It's not often that a player has the Patriot management by the short hairs, but this is one of those cases.

Just too many hard feelings over that dropped pass Wes. Sorry

Welker is far and away the best route runner in the game, but I don't know about second-best WR overall. Fitz, Megatron and Johnson leap to mind as being ahead of Welker, in my opinion. I definitely see him as top ten, maybe top five.

May 18, 2012  09:50 AM ET

I think the Pats are more concerned about the expiring contracts of their young core of players.

May 18, 2012  09:52 AM ET

I don't get what is so bad about being tagger. $9.5Mil all guaranteed, next year it will be over 10 for sure. Seems like pretty good money to me
