Is Forte gunning for A.P. money?

08:06 AM ET 05.18 | In the case of Matt Forte, the most GM Phil Emery has said is the that the Bears continue to work on a deal. Former Packers contract negotiator Andrew Brandt probably summed up the team's stance perfectly. "The hardest position to sink long-term money into is running back because it has the shortest shelf life," Brandt told the Philadelphia Daily News. ... Recent pay days Forte will examine, along with the McCoy deal, are contracts given to Arian Foster ($20.75 million guaranteed), DeAngelo Williams ($21 million guaranteed) and Marshawn Lynch ($17 million guaranteed). Unless he's gunning for a pay day like Adrian Peterson or Chris Johnson received, those seem to be backs that create a range for Forte and the Bears.

He's a good running back!!!

Peterson money? From the Bears?

Good luck with that.

May 18, 2012  08:18 AM ET

That's just not gonna happen.

Play like AP and get AP money. Not quite there yet. But he does deserve a nice contract.

The Bears need an offensive line that can pass block and run block. If they chew up too much cap space on the "talent," there's not enough left for the basics.

Is it all about the Bears, or all about Matt Forte?

Forte has been underpaid up til now and I haven't noticed the Bears investing the savings in a decent line, or decent receivers either. They must have it all tied up in the defense, or more likely they're just taking the excess as profit.

Yes, just not a great RB.

Forte is due $7.7 million this year with the tag. all guaranteed money. If no deal is reached he gets tagged again for around $8 million in 2013. He ran for 997 yards last year and coming off an injury. Not bad.
That is over $15 million in guaranteed money. The McCoy deal has $21 million in guaranteed money.

It's hard to judge how good he could be given the offensive line and stupid experiments like hiring Mike Martz as an OC. He definitely should be on par with Jackson and Lynch as far as money goes.

Tag money means he is getting the average of the top five RBs in the game. That is pretty respectful of the Bears. Makes him the third highest paid rb this year.

And how.

He has done so much for the Bears, they are totally dicking him around IMO. I wish theyd pay him and move on. He carried the workload last year, and when Briggs cried about a new contract he had Urlacher back him up and he got one, Pay Forte NOW!!!

The Bears are right, though, about the short lifespan of a running back.

QUOTE(#14):

I think the Bears want to see how he's recovered from knee surgery before paying him... it only makes sense... I know he's done alot for the franchise but after all.. what's the point giving him a big contract if he hasn't recovered enough from his blown knee... it is a business after all...

I hope that's the case. But Forte (or his agent) will probably look at it like he's losing a year on a long-term deal, and more importantly, losing out on the signing bonus money. Having said that, 50 did have a good point in post #10. Forte should have a good idea by now that this might be as good as he'll get from Chicago, but $15M guaranteed over two seasons is nothing to sneeze at.

May 18, 2012  09:37 AM ET

Forte still can't seem to grasp that the Bears own him, and will continue to drain him for every inch of his talent on the cheap.

Too bad their "thrifty" reputation has preceded them for so long.
