Eagles' Jarrett still a step behind

08:06 AM ET 05.18 | Earlier this week, Andy Reid said that Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman would be his starting safeties when OTAs begin next week, news that on the surface didn't surprise many. But it did hammer home -- once again -- that Jaiquawn Jarrett is not ready to start in the NFL. While formal full squad practices start in five days the Eagles have been at work since mid-April. Jarrett was supposed to benefit from a full offseason. If he had showed any improvement in the classroom -- where the bulk of work has been done over the last month -- you may have seen the Eagles hand him the job now knowing full well that there was still plenty of time for Coleman to win it back.

And this is why the Eagles have to hit Free Agency hard to build their defense. Nothing new about it. They take Jarrett in the second round of that 2011 draft ( the guy with no elite speed from a sketchy school program) to replace guys they drafted early ( Allen and the like ) Oh, yes and moving up in 2010 to take a DE with a " high motor while bypassing JPP.
Skill players they know, the rest of the positions? That is what gets them.

I don't see a lot of joy in Eagleville this season.

More joy for me this year than last year. I was worried last year about too many new players and a new defensive system. I do hate that they haven't really addressed that secondary though.

Eagles are not trying to replace Allen he was set back by a knee injury and i think he's still gonna be a good player. got better as the year went on last season. other than that, unfortunately i have to agree.
Gonna be an important year for Graham. (he gets 1 more year to show what he's got as he was also derailed by a knee injury) He will never be JPP, but has to show he can be a solid contributor or he wont be around much longer. Eagles getting Curry in the 2nd round this year adds pressure on him as well

Reid is the master at wasting second round draft picks on defense. He accumulates them and then throws them away bouncing around the draft.

When the Giants drafted JPP he was considered a project by all the draft Guru's, no one had him as a first Rounder!
