Mavs packaging Odom for run at Gasol?

08:07 AM ET 05.18 | The clock will begin to tick a little louder on the Lamar Odom watch in Dallas. Whether he meant to or not, [Rick Carlisle on ESPN Dallas] opened the door for speculation that the Mavs could be open to dealing Odom for a player of relevance. It would require packaging him with say, Shawn Marion ($8.6 million next season), for a high-dollar player another team wants to get out from under the contract, for example Pau Gasol in Los Angeles or Amare Stoudemire in New York. The catch is that such a deal would make it difficult for the Mavs to then carve out enough cap space to offer a max deal to [Deron Williams]. That is unless Dallas then moved the incoming player to another team in exchange for a player whose salary matched Marion's.

Tonight, Gasol is definitely playing for his job next year. A lot of Lakers are.

This is not a bad deal for both sides. It might work. Lakers get odom back.

But who would want Odom back? Appreciate the past dedication, but he sells perfume now...

Why would the Lakers trade Pau to get that whiny ass Odom back? The only likely reason would be a salary dump but I would think that other teams could offer better packages.

The downside to Odom going to any other team is that he's shown himself to be useless if he's not "happy". Odom's going to be a tough sell for any team in the league if the Lakers won't take him back.

The Lakers clearly don't want to pay Gasol 19mil next year so year they are trying to dump bad salaries for better cheaper salaries so they can be a player in free agency. This may work but as the article states it needs another team to be involved. I said this before but these players most likely can only be traded for one another:

Boozer, Amare, Gasol, Brand, Rashard Lewis. All are power forwards making too much money for their contract. So these are the teams that probably need to be trading with one another

Only way anybody should take Odom back is if he gets away from those Kardashians..no way his head can be in the right place being around that mess.

It's obvious that Odom misses the Lakers. Any team that trades for him will get the same results as Dallas. If the Lakers want him back it would be better to wait until his option is declined and pick him up on the cheap.

Thanks, but no thanks. Odom is too unpredictable. Any team would have to be nuts to give up "a player of relevance" for Odom.

What, exactly, could the Mavs get for a player that openly quit on his team?
