Nats ready to 'bust' McCutchen in next meeting

08:12 AM ET 05.18 | The Nationals learned a lesson the hard way Thursday against Pittsburgh. When a manager says an opposing batter appeared "awful comfortable" at the plate -- as Davey Johnson said of Pirates star Andrew McCutchen on Thursday night -- it is a standard, baseball-code way of saying, "We should have backed the sonofagun off the plate and not let him get so comfortable to begin with." Jordan Zimmermann, the Nationals' pitcher of record in a 5-3 loss at Nationals Park, did not disagree. Instead, after giving up two home runs to McCutchen, he said the same thing even more explicitly: "I think we've got to bust him in the next time we face him." Chalk it up as a lesson learned.

It should be part of baseball's unwritten code to just go out and do what you need to do and not talk about it with the media before it even happens.

and this is different than Hamels' welcome to Harper, how?

First, Harper got beaned and McCutchen did not. Second, Harper got beaned because Hamels didn't like him not because he hit well against him. Third, the Nats were talking about brushing McCutchen back, not necessarily hitting him (but you can read between the lines)

It is a perfectly acceptable code to admit to busting someone off the plate beforehand, then denying everything after the fact. Saves you a suspension
