08:19 AM ET 05.18 | These days, the words "Ohio State" and "violations" tend to grab the eye. Like first-year football coach Urban Meyer, less than three weeks after he was hired, committing a secondary violation by saying "good luck" to recruit Noah Spence at a game in December. ... None of the violations, among the 46 reported in 21 sports since May 30 of last year, are a big deal on their own, nothing close to the major violations that threw the football program into turmoil during 2011. The violations were released to The Plain Dealer on Thursday in response to a records request filed to Ohio State on April 18 for all NCAA violations committed by the school's athletic department dating back to May 30, 2011.

A secondary violation by saying good luck to a recruit? That surely deserves the loss of 5-10 schollys if not another bowl ban.

I thought they had the largest compliance office in the country now?

Makes me wonder what the penalty is for telling a recruit 'you suck."

At least someone in the compliance department can count to 46...or so it seems.

They do....on the old watch, it would have only been 21 violations in 9 sports!!!

Let me say this loud and clear:

"FIRE GENE SMITH RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!"

::flips quarter to JRM::

46 will be a drop in the bucket. It would be interesting to see a chart of all the other 120 schools withing the same time frame.

They do. It's 25,000 square feet. However, they fired all the employees.

I can't figure out why he was not run out of town with Tressel.

My HS freshman coach said that to me. Then he suggested I'd be a better fit for the debate team.

Now, here you are...

It took them a year and 21 sports to accumulate 46 minor violations? Isn't 46 minor violations an average week for Lane Kiffin?

Who'd have guessed that Urban Meyer would have signed up for the Lane Kiffin School of "How To Turn A Program Around"...?

He's here? Where? I don't see him.

JRM, are you hiding in my office? Come out so I can see you, you're freaking me out!!

May 18, 2012  09:36 AM ET

46 minor violations is not a lot, but far be it for me to defend Ohio State... As has been pointed out, just saying "Good luck" is a violation. You can easily see how 46 can be racked up.

I've been telling my wife that for years.
