The Pirates have approached first baseman Adam LaRoche to discuss a contract that could span three or four years, a signing that would be the franchise's most significant since shortstop Jack Wilson's four-year extension in 2006.

Who?

January 10, 2008  09:41 AM ET

It has to be a hard thing to be a pirates fan, I mean what do you do?? go for the team that has the most ex pirates on it??

January 10, 2008  10:14 AM ET

it is hard being a pirates fan.

January 10, 2008  10:15 AM ET

Can you say CONTRACTION? And yet MLB wants to add more teams.

January 10, 2008  10:58 AM ET

I dont think they should contract, expecially KC or Pitt. Just cap the league to min and max and make it competitive. Worked for the NFL. If you want to contract take Marlins and TB out.

Why does one of the worse teams in baseball have one of the nicest parks? And such a great history? Where is Craig Wilson? Don't EVER talk about getting rid of this team. The suicide rate in the 'Burgh (one of my all time favorite cities and I live in NYC) would skyrocket. Thank god they have the Pens and Steelers. Reanimate the corpse of Willie Stargell! That guy ruled.

Again, blame it on the Yanks and Sox for doing their part to inflate the average salary of MLB players. I think that the only thing that will put a stop to the madness is for a MLB lockout for a few years. Guys will come crawling back for a league minimum salary. Boras is not helping the cause either.

January 10, 2008  12:27 PM ET

mlb needs a cap. it's boring how the rich teams get all the free agents and are always good. however, it doesn't help that the buccos management has been so terrible the last few years. i think every truely successful league needs to be run like the nfl.

Pittsburgh in the summer was a lot of fun when the Pirates were good, its been tough to watch them in this most recent era. The park is great and going to a game is still fun, but when you get to August and September...the constant losing wears on you. Plus, your mind can start to focus on the Steelers and Penguins. Someday the Pirates will compete...someday.

There is simply nothing better than a happy buccaneer!

Why sign for 3-4 years when they are going to dump your salary in 1 or 2 years, Play out your arbritration years, file for free agency and dictate your destiny. Nobody lasts more than a few years with the Pirates, once that salary hits 5M+ your gone for prospects, or as we Pirates Fans say, the start of another 5 year rebuilding plan. and It's NEVER going to change until Bob Nutting sells the team,

January 10, 2008  02:23 PM ET

Pirates haven't been interesting since Bonilla, Bonds, & Leyland.

January 10, 2008  02:26 PM ET

I'm getting an extension, too.

But it ain't a contract extension.

January 10, 2008  02:29 PM ET

i'm not going to lie. it's tough being in this city when the Pirates play. The only benefits are 1) great fireworks and give away nights; 2) having fun with their horrible slogans; case in point last year's "we will" quickly became "we will -disappoint our fans" "we will- strand at least 15 men on base" "we will - trade away any good player for a new nacho vendor" but most importantly 3) getting a new mascot that looks like the closest thing to captain morgan than anything offered by another sports team. At least we have Crosby...

they've been rebuilding since '93.

Nicest park in the majors according to the players, worst team. LOL @ Jack Wilson, god hes horrendous...

Umm, I thought this new GM was going to build from the ground up, trade current players with any value to rebuild the farm system. Signing LaRoche, who had a very bad first half last year, to a long term deal seems like a Littlefield move (Wilson, Kendall, etc.). If you're gonna trade him in 2 years, trade him now, not after you sign him to a pricey contract that will be tough to deal if he doesn't return to his Atlanta Braves form.

January 10, 2008  08:36 PM ET

Maybe the O's and the Pirates can combine operations into 1 team.

January 10, 2008  08:45 PM ET

I don't even know why you sign long term with the Pirates if you're LaRoche or Wilson (who I don't think is horrendous; he could definitely get a job elsewhere.) But why stay on that team? They're hopeless as long as their management team stays in place.
