Heat strapped with unproductive bench

09:50 AM ET 05.20 | The Heat better hope that Shane Battier, Udonis Haslem (who had 19 combined minutes the past two games), Mike Miller and James Jones aren't as bad as they have looked the past month because those four - combined with Joel Anthony - are due $52.3 million over the next three years. And even if the Heat uses the one-time amnesty clause to remove Miller from its salary cap, a league spokesman said Miami - barring unlikely additional cost-cutting - still would have only the $3 million mid-level exception available to teams paying the luxury tax, not the $5 million full mid-level exception. The problem, as one Heat official put it, is the bench players "are very limited offensively. They cannot drive to the basket, they cannot create their own shot. And they can't make a shot at the moment. A lot has to be done with the bench."

This sort of bench production has been going on for two years and now the MH wants to act like it's some revelation. The Heat supporters were quite fine with the team and thought the answer to building a team was 3 stars and 9 average joes, or whoever could fit within the cap space. Now with a good possibility of getting bounced in the 2nd round, you need to find blame other than where it should go.......that being Riley and Wade. Many got carried away with the glitz and forgot about importance and patience of building a team. This team was built overnight using a few nice pieces and alot of shotty construction. That's doomed failure in my book.

With all the opt-out clauses in 2014, the next couple of years will be interesting in Miami.

Though LeBron took less than the max he could have received, you make a good point. They definitely need more from others (other than the big 3) especially for the playoffs. It seems that Miller can't shoot in the playoffs at all and Udonis' shooting skills have dropped off as well. They need younger more athletic rising stars. Obviously a championship win would greatly enhance those endorsement $ as well as peace of mind.

Indiana Pacers are healthy, have got balanced scoring, a huge front court, and confidence. Miami is dealing with the loss of Bosh, an unproductive bench, and 2 fatigued all stars in the 3rd & 4th quarters. If Miami can pull this off, I doff my hat to them....
