Cubs-Orioles trade expected

07:07 AM ET 01.10 | On hold over much of the last month, the Brian Roberts talks are on again between the Cubs and Orioles. This deal is almost certainly going to happen -- the only question is when and how much it is going to cost the Cubs. The feeling among major league executives is soon, and a lot. Don't be surprised if the trade is finalized later this week -- perhaps even Wednesday -- and the deal includes pitchers Sean Marshall, Sean Gallagher and Ronny Cedeno.

That's awesome! I love this trade! Cedeno had played himself out of an everyday spot and Marshall will be no-better than a number 4 starter in the AL! This will give DeRosa a chance to spell Ramirez, Lee and maybe even Fukudome every once in a while. I couldn't feel much better about this trade!

One thing is for sure all the fans have taken flack from the media saying 6 billion in revenue its obvious the fans dont care about PED's. Well how about the owners??? We just found out that Roberts was on the list he admitted using and he has been sought after by team after team. Seems the owners care less as the payout to the PED player like bee's to honey. If the teams didnt sign anyone guilty of use I would have no problem with that.

We already knew the owners didn't care. The thing that gets me is that if we believe that once you stop using the peds that your risk of injury increases, it at least looks that way to me, that teams might think twice about hiring a guy who will be injury prone, no matter how good he is. I think Giambi, amongst others, is a good example of this.

January 10, 2008  09:49 AM ET

If you get BRob, you'll be getting a class act. He only tried peds once. He shouldn't be on the list. You'll find he's a great community and clubhouse guy. He would sorely be missed in Baltimore.

The Cubs should do this deal in a heartbeat before the Orioles come to their senses. Oh wait, Angelos owns the team, so that won't happen anytime soon.

January 10, 2008  10:50 AM ET

Who are the orioles? OH YEAH! The team that grows players and gets rid of them when they are redy to really produce... you know, the farm team from MD...
HA!

January 10, 2008  11:18 AM ET

I'm sorry, but this guy is not a class act. He might be a "good guy," who everyone likes, but he lied about doing roids and now we're supposed to believe him when he gets caught and says he only did it once? right. and when my mom caught me with weed in high school i was holding it for someone else.

From a purely baseball standpoint, this trade is great. It allows you to give Pie a shot and bat him 8th without risking it hurting your lineup. And none of those guys will be more than serviceable MLB players.
I'm a huge Cubs fan, but I'm really conflicted about this trade.

January 10, 2008  11:35 AM ET

yes! thank god! we get to be rid of cedeno and marshall! and get brian roberts! it's almost too good to be true...

January 10, 2008  01:19 PM ET

I'm worried we're banking too much on dempster being a reliable starter

January 10, 2008  01:21 PM ET

I love to go Dempster Diving!

January 10, 2008  01:25 PM ET

As long as we do not get Corey Patterson back.......This is going to be a great move for the Cubbies. It not only brings another solid infielder, but with Derosa being a super sub, that will bring depth to our bench. I am only worried about our pitching. Zambrano and Lilly are solid, but we are not the Yankees with home run hitters or the Tigers, who can rely on decent pitching.
We need another Arm!

January 10, 2008  01:25 PM ET

also, where do you think he'll fit into the lineup? Do we bat him leadoff, drop soriano to 5th? I mean, Roberts Fukodome Lee Ramirez Soariano Theriot Pie Soto would be mean

January 10, 2008  01:48 PM ET

As an Orioles fan, this is disheartening.. if I have a second favorite team, it is for sure the Cubbies. This trade appears to be so one sided it's rediculous. Should this hold up, congrats Cubs, you got a grade a lead off man and second baseman.

And you must drop Soriano and let roberts lead off. Soriano has never made a lot of sense at lead off to me.. seems to be an ideal 2 spot guy.

January 10, 2008  01:49 PM ET

Lindieen

Man, isn't this a good problem to have? I think he could bat 2 or 7 or anything above or below that. I think keeping Soriano at one, maybe Roberts 2, Lee 3, Ramirez 4 and then Fukodme 5 would be strong. We still do not know what will translate to his American game, so putting pressure on him to deliver for the Cubs (Fukodome) would be the last thing we want. Ease him in and he will be fine. Then 6 Theriot, 7 Soto, 8 Pie. If Soto has a monster year too, we are in pretty good shape, like I said before, we need pitching, but who doesn't?

January 10, 2008  01:52 PM ET

A daggum clash of the TITANS it is!!!!!

January 10, 2008  01:59 PM ET

i'd prefer getting bedard over roberts

January 10, 2008  02:07 PM ET

Good point, but also think Roberts is an everyday player, Bedard is an every 5th day player. Now if it was say, Bedard and Santana....I know pipe dream, then yes.

January 10, 2008  02:13 PM ET

yeah, but Cubs need one more ace type pitcher. Bedard would be a much bigger boost to the team, Big Z, Bedard, Lilly, Hill, Marquis???

January 10, 2008  02:16 PM ET

Yuck Marquis. Why they got him, is beyond me. Should have kept Maddux or someone. I forgot about Hill. He will keep improving. He is young and has good stuff.

January 10, 2008  05:43 PM ET

Id rather give him Theriot than gallagher....we need young pitching and he is very valuable in the long run....
