Book points finger at Bush
Posted: Thursday January 10, 2008 07:33AM ET
In an upcoming book, a would-be San Diego sports marketer provides new details regarding allegations that he gave Reggie Bush tens of thousands in cash while Bush was still at USC. "Tarnished Heisman" shifts much of the focus from Bush's parents -- who also allegedly received benefits -- to the star running back. However, while the book hints that USC coaches may have known about some of the arrangements, it does not provide evidence that any school official was aware of alleged improper gifts. Based largely on interviews with Lloyd Lake, who tried to secure Bush as a client for the marketing company he and others attempted to launch, the book claims the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner was provided with hotel stays, cash for shopping sprees and money to buy and customize a car.

I fully admit I'm an USC fan, so I don't want this to be true. But I'd like to see testimony from someone other than Lake giving info, before having to face potential facts.

Report Offensive Commentno surprise here. The only surprise is how the NCAA and their investigators havent found anything wrong with it. But USC is the media darling and basically LA's NFL team. Short of a smoking gun, bloody fingerprints, a confession, and 50 eye witnesses, the NCAA will determine that nothing happened here and move on.

Report Offensive CommentHow does SC get allegedly get away with this while Oklahoma was punished so quickly?
IrishR#1 | 01/10/08, 09:03 AM
Report Offensive CommentSchool knowledge, Irish.
Oklahoma caught the infractions and self-reported.
USC claims no knowledge with this Bush ****.

Report Offensive Comment^^ Good point, Irish. And Oklahoma reported themselves. Makes you wonder...

Report Offensive CommentSC has not been fouond guilty of anything (i.e. OU players driving in the cars, and being documented working at the dealership). Whereas this "thus far" is just a want to be agent displaying sour grapes. Maybe Reggie's parents' made promises and took money, but that has nothing to do with USC. I would advise OU and Alabama (Crimson Kid) to improve the graduation rates of your football players and your overall academic rankings and not Reggie Bush. Maybe we just live in a environment where the name Bush (i.e. George W.)allows you to do things and not be held accountable.
Jabril1217 | 01/10/08, 09:16 AM
Report Offensive CommentActually, Crimson, that's not a surprise either.
The sad thing is, Irish, the two kids at Oklahoma never even played, and the Sooners lost the whole season.
DSliq: yeah, there used to be a theory that if you "cooperated" with the investigation the NCAA would go easy on you. I think it's increasingly clear that feigning ignorance is the way to go.

Report Offensive CommentNotre Dame, I guess someone needs to investigate the golden domers. Please, the only school that can loose against every ranked team they play, have a 8-4 or 9-3 record and get invited to a major bowl (where they get blown out, over & over again). I can see how you can be so disgusted by bias and the lack of justice in college football.

Q: Is your team winning?
A: Then they are probably paying players like this ...

Report Offensive CommentI think the NCAA was too hard on the OU kids as well. But there was a history with that particular dealership (i.e. booster) that had gotten warnings prior to this incident and OU did not stop make it a point to tellplayers NOT to work there. From what I understand players are no longer allowed to work at that dealership which should have been done years before this situation. OU had been warned, but OU did not warn the players effectively.

Report Offensive CommentWow jabril, somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. I understand ND sucked last year, but how that has anything to do with this is beyond me.
(Unless of course, you're suggesting Bush didn't take money because ND sucks - makes sense)

Report Offensive CommentLloyd Lake is bitter because he got played by Bush. He shelled out money to a college athlete in hopes of getting a return on his investment. When it didn't happen, he "spills the beans." Mr. Lake knew what he was doing was against NCAA rules so I don't feel sorry for him at all. Reggie Bush did what hundreds of athletes are doing nationwide each year. Count your losses Mr. Lake and move on.

Report Offensive CommentIts true ...
Lets see ... a good example was when i was attending Ohio State. Cris Carter ... then a soph or junior was riding around campus in a brand new trans am ... lets just say his parents didn't have that kind of cash.
Another one .. Brian Bosworth while attending OU had a corvette. Yea ... right.

Report Offensive CommentIm sure star players all around the country are just about the same. Not paying college athletes above the table is rediculous. Either start doing it up front or do like baseball and have a minor league system.
ClintInDFW | 01/10/08, 10:19 AM
Report Offensive CommentThe issue here isn't that others are or were suspected - it's that Bush was "caught" doing it (depending on whose story you believe).

That's a good idea in principle but even if the athletes are given a stipend, the "superstars" will still get paid perks from alumni and boosters. Besides, the athletes already get paid while attending college. It's called a scholarship.
