08:13 AM ET 05.21 | According to Dodgers manager Don Mattingly, second baseman Mark Ellis, now lost for up to six weeks, was in danger of losing his leg. After being injured Friday night on a hard slide by St. Louis' Tyler Greene, Ellis was hurried to the hospital Saturday for surgery to reduce swelling in the leg that if not stopped could have forced an amputation. "Doc said last night that in another six or seven hours, he had a chance of losing his leg," Mattingly said. Mattingly also said the prompt and correct attention by the Dodgers' training staff in the aftermath of the injury likely helped Ellis' cause. Ellis is expected to remain hospitalized until Tuesday.

I went to college with this guy (@ U of Fl, along with Wilkerson, Eckstein and Fogg) and actually got to know him (my roommate was a walk-on on the team). He's was back then a class act. I know his clock is definitely ticking, but to hear he almost lost his leg is rather frightening. I wish this guy the best.
