08:29 AM ET 05.22 | In a sign the team may be moving ahead with such a project, the Red Wings have reportedly selected an architect to design a new NHL arena in downtown Detroit. HKS, co-designer of American Airlines Center, will team with Chan Krieger NBBJ, a Boston architect specializing in urban developments, according to three industry sources. Officials with HKS in Dallas and Chan Krieger NBBJ said they could not comment on the project. Karen Cullen, a corporate spokeswoman for the Red Wings, said there was nothing new to report, adding "our organization has been on record saying we'd like to have a new arena in downtown Detroit." The Red Wings intend to develop a new 18,000-seat facility to replace outdated Joe Louis Arena, sources said.

and will almost certainly hold the beleagured city of Detroit at least partially liable (read: hostage) for at least part of it, even though thr owners can well afford to pay for their own sandbox

That five dollar pizza is sure paying off (As long as my property taxes don't go up, all is well)!

That may not work this time Spiny. I have more money than Detroit to use for building an arena (about $2.46, they only have about twenty cents in the bank)). I guess it's possible (but not likely) that Michigan would put something in. I think the most they can hope for is some money for road improvements. But, it can be done on a privately financed basis. Did in DC for the Verizon Center for the Caps ( so was the Cap Center before that) and Fed Ex Field for the Redskins. All privately financed.

Any place that has a pizza already ready for me when I walk in, will never get a hial from me. After they sign all the UFA's how about signing some pizza cooks.

They will probably make a similar deal to what they did with Comerica Park, use the Hotel/Car Rental Taxes and make a casino deal.

The Joe looks like a larger version of the Nassau Coliseum.

Never been to the Joe, but from what I hear, I share this sentiment. All I ask is that the new place not be named after some corp thing, like "The Cheerios Center (aka the Joe)". Just name it Joe Louis and plaster advertising within.

With unemployment in Det. one of the highest in the country how are the tax payers going to pay their fair share of the new arena.
