Ovechkin no longer untouchable

08:30 AM ET 05.22 | Could Alex Ovechkin, who has nearly $90 million coming to him over the next nine years, be moved? Should anybody laugh off the suggestion? "I think it's possible," said one former NHL coach. "I think it would have to be a New York or maybe even a Montreal with the owner (Geoff Molson) there." I know the Capitals have so much tied up in Ovechkin; he's the face of their franchise. He's one of the most marketable hockey players in the world. It would be difficult to trade a guy with two Hart trophies, with already more than 300 goals, with nine years left on his contract, and get full value. But trading Ovechkin is not as farfetched today as it was a few years ago, though.

He is MORE than welcome here

I lost a lot of respect and admiration for this guy this year. He lost his head a bunch of times and ended up costing his team.

Let's go BLUES! We need a sniper and a presence. Could Ovie live with Backes as team captain? Does Hitch want to deal with the ego (to be bruised with a trade)? Only Doug Armstrong knows........

I think the window has closed for that line-up on the Caps.
Maybe Ovi would bring an All-star and some good prospects in return.

he also carried them for most of the season when everyone was out, and outside of Holtby, was probably their best player in the Rangers' series

He sucks...he finally lost his talent. Just trade him to the panthers. **** we'll deal with it :)

I thought of this last series. If there is another amnesty clause and the Caps decide to go to a defenisve minded approach like they did with Hunter, would they even think of buying him out, if they couldn't trade him for anything good (like having to take back a bad contract).

I think that if Caps management thinks the window is/has indeed closed...this would be a great way to rebuild for them

I guess Semin will finally have his wish! To touch Ovie!

agree- and that was with greatly reduced minutes

I hope you're wrong but the firing of Bruce was significant in that GMGM was admitting that something was wrong with this group of guys. Semin and Hunter are gone but we have two first round picks. With Nicky, Laich, Carlson, Alzner, Holtby, Chimera, Marcus and a few others Ovi has a ton of talent surrounding him. No reason to break this team up yet.

Silly article. I note the "former NHL coach" is not named. Anybody can be traded (see Gretzky) but this story is based on maybe's, if's and could be's. Usually these don't start until after the Cup Finals.

May 22, 2012  09:38 AM ET

maybe they can get Detroit to take him.....

May 22, 2012  09:40 AM ET

Will fit right in with the Flyers...

Too bad Flyers don't have the cap space. Flyers vs Pens with Ovie in tow.

May 22, 2012  09:42 AM ET

Not sure any team wants to spend almost 1/6 of their cap on 1 player.

May 22, 2012  09:42 AM ET

So a sub par year and he's out the door?

because there isn't quite enough animosity between them as it is

May 22, 2012  09:55 AM ET

Maybe they can trade him to Montreal for a beer company.

This may be news if someone inside the Capitals organization said this.
